“Love, a spark from nowhere to eternity, life to death, death to rebirth.” -- Peony Pavilion
Pivoine is based on the Kunqu Opera Peony Pavilion 牡丹亭 (Tang Xianzu, 1598). Framed by the opera's love storyline, the piece unfolds organically through electronic sounds and the performance of the Pipa and the Kunqu singer. An augmented reality world is created through the smartphones, both aurally and visually. The public is encouraged to interact with the musicians through open-back headphones at several moments during the piece.
