The year is 3023, and Earth has been abandoned. Energy consumption and the mass harvesting of natural resources have caused the Earth’s surface to become completely uninhabitable, forcing humanity to begin colonizing space. Despite the Earth’s condition, some humans wish to return home, to the planet of their ancestors. Taking on the role of a microbiologist, the player has been sent back to the planet to begin cleaning its surface for resettlement through the use of pollution consuming bacteria. Perfect Strain is a real-time strategy game designed to help teach concepts of evolution. Players learn about natural selection, selection pressure, mutations, genetic variation, and genetic fitness while also dispelling various misconceptions about what evolution is. For each of the five missions in the game, players are tasked with breeding a different strain of bacteria that holds a specific genetic trait. Players must watch these bacteria in a petri dish as they grow, reproduce, and mutate; but they will also have the opportunity to apply selection pressure to the culture, mirroring real-world scientific techniques. Each mission will require breeding strains of bacteria that are increasingly complex and demand more selection pressure used in tandem.
