Remove backgrounds from photos of products, people and pets — one image or a whole folder. Alpha automatically finds subjects, lets you choose what to keep and gives you a brush to refine the edges. Export transparent PNGs for presentations, collages, websites and other projects.
ONE PHOTO OR A WHOLE FOLDER
• Open a photo or drop a folder of images. Alpha starts removing backgrounds automatically.
• Browse the results in a grid and open individual images for touch-ups.
• Export all finished results to a folder you choose.
CHOOSE YOUR SUBJECTS, REFINE THE DETAILS
• Click to keep one object. Shift-click to add others, Option-click to remove them.
• Use Object mode for things and pets, or Person mode for people — up to four people in a photo.
• Refine the mask with the Erase and Restore brush. Adjust its size, strength and softness.
• Zoom in, compare with the original, and undo or redo your steps.
• Keep fine details when editing and exporting your cutouts.
TRANSPARENT PNGS FOR YOUR PROJECTS
• Export PNGs with transparency. Your original files stay unchanged.
• Choose a transparent, white, black or custom background in the Export panel.
• Copy cutouts, drag them to the Finder and other apps, or send them using the Share menu.
• Display P3 photos keep their color profile.
PROCESSED ON YOUR MAC
Your photos are processed on your device, without uploading them to a server. Alpha works offline.
Opens JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, TIFF, GIF and PDF. GIFs use the first frame; PDFs open at the first page. Available in 20 interface languages.

This program will erase the background. but all you have as a tool to do it is a circle. Cant get into corners or detail areas of the picture your trying to clean. Takes forever to use. If they had a few different shapes to use it would be really helpful but with only a circle its not even worth the time!

Thanks for the detailed feedback. Since 2.0 you don’t trace edges by hand: the AI selects the subject in one click. The brush (size, strength, softness) together with zoom is now just for touch-ups in tight corners.

Sorry about the crashes. Alpha 2.0 was rewritten from scratch: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, WebP and GIF open without problems, and 2.2 opens PDF files too (the first page). If anything still goes wrong, please write to us: astrvm.app/apps/alpha/#support
Doubles image size

Why do you make it double the image pixel size?! I can’t import into my project now because its too big! You got my $3 but your app is worthless.

Thanks for reporting this. It’s fixed: since 2.0 Alpha exports the PNG at exactly the pixel size of the original image.
• Export on a background: choose Transparent, White, Black or any color in the Export panel.
• Open PDF files as images, with the first page ready to cut out.
• Keep fine details when editing and exporting cutouts.
