Its good, but needs to fix these 2 issue to be great.

I have used Microsoft from DOS days to Windows 11. But recently migrated to MAC for personal use. However, I do PC support from home and have a Windows 10 work LAB running. Both MAC and Windows PC are on the same Local network and IP scheme. My main issue is hit and miss. One day I can connect to the Windows 10 LAB via the hostname, the next I must use the IP address. I can map my shared drive from my MAC using the hostname yet cannot connect to the hostname with this Microsoft Remote Desktop app running on my MAC. Rebooting or flushing the network makes no difference. My next issue happened with the newest update. Once I am connected and use the fit to Window option and exit out of full screen mode to window mode, The desktop rather than stay at a scaled down version now blows up. The issue sort of looks like I am using the old Microsoft magnifier app. I really hate this as it makes using multiple apps hard while connect. Changing resolution makes no difference. Issue is still there. So, I truly hope that these two issues get fixed in an update soon. With this said. I really like this app. I appreciate the fact its free, easy to use and it has the ability to import or export the RDP files.

The software serves its purpose, but it is wrought with bugs and suspect UI design elements that for several major releases hav e not been addressed. In particular on a i9/AMD 2018 Mac, connected to a Display Link docking station, if the docking station was unplugged during a live RDP session, the software would cause the screen to go black, and it was irrecoverable until rebooted. On multiple Macbook versions, when a session is active and the connection is broken say when the laptop is put to sleep by closing the lid, when the computer is openned again it asks the question do you want to resume session. This is annoying because if accepted, the resolution from the prior session is restored which might not match the resolution of the current monitors the laptop is connectd to, and so the bet option is to say no, and then reconnect. A better solution would simply be to be disconnect without showing the dialog box and big black screen. Hitting the 'Delete' key at any time when transfering a large file with copy paste between local and remote connections with throw an unspecified error and cancel the transaction, even if the File Explorer progress bar is not active and the user is in any other application. Sometimes the remote desktop background image will not be visible, and the RDP session will just show a black background on the remote Windows/Windows server computer. This bug is not consistent, but frequent.

Microsoft doesn’t seem to understand that people could be connecting to multiple virtual computers from different companies. All of their software makes it increasingly difficult to switch from one company to another. I can’t switch at all on iPhone apps because one company took over everything MS. This new Windows App is no different. With the previous “Remote Desktop” one could at least switch between accounts in the Quick Launch in the Menu Bar… not so now. You have to bring up the “Connection Center” and then switch accounts. You can’t Favorite them and have them in the same place. You can’t quickly connect to anything. And that’s not even getting started on the number of times I have to enter a password to get logged in to the remote system and have to hit OK on yet another screen in the launch process… missing any one of them will cause it to close the connection. Oh, and then it randomly needs to re-authenticate throughout the day regardless of the fact you may be actively in a meeting. The interface even got uglier with this upgrade… I didn’t know that was possible. MS design team says “hold my beer” I guess.Does anyone from Microsoft use their own software? Have they ever had to work for multiple companies? Better still, do any of them use Apple computers to have an idea of how things should be working? I’d guess the answer is yes given the number of ideas they steal and execute poorly.

Update: MS engaged me and put a team on this issue. They are still working through the issues but at this point the performance is enormously better and acceptable- and it feels like they are absolutely committed to getting proper performance. I find it interesting that this was the avenue to get attention to the issue rather than their troubleshooting channel but either way I am satisfied with the progress. End of update. *** It seems to be a back burner work in progress. The old RDP was better by far. MS seems to be working to work the bugs out, but it is not a priority for them. The latest problem is functionality with old server platforms, in my case server 2012. I keep sending feedback to MS and they eventually get around to it. They need to realize that industrial control systems do not get upgraded at the same pace as the rest of the world. Reality. To be fair, it seems to work fine with Windows 10 and later.

In this release we made the following updates to address issues with RemoteApp connections: • Resolved an issue where the secure desktop window would appear empty while connecting to a remote app when using multiple monitors. • Fixed mispaints that occurred if advanced RemoteFX graphics were not being used to render remote apps. We also fixed some other bugs: • Fixed issues with ALT-based shortcuts (such as ALT+ENTER and ALT+UP ARROW) in Unicode keyboard mode. • Resolved modifier-key state that could interfere with subsequent SHIFT-based mouse click selections and keyboard shortcuts. • Fixed a startup hang that prevented command-line operations from completing. • Handled connection failures caused by saved credentials containing a domain but no username (users will be prompted to correct invalid credentials). In addition, we made improvements to enhance diagnostics insights: • Improved classification of sign-in errors to better distinguish access restrictions from internal authentication failures. • Improved connection and workspace diagnostics by identifying whether a signed-in Entra account is a home or guest account. • Fixed an issue where UDP connection drops caused by network instability were incorrectly classified. We have also added a toggle to enable WebAuthn redirection for AVD and Windows 365-based connections (Settings > General > Use WebAuthn redirection). Individual PC connections can be opted out of WebAuthn redirection by configuring published PC custom settings (under the Devices & Audio tab).
