Word Trotter is an offline travel phrasebook made of pictures: you show a picture, you get understood. Allergies, emergencies, restaurants, pharmacy, transport, in ten languages, with no account and no connection. It is not a translator. It is a picture dictionary to show people, for the moments when words do not get through. A noisy market, someone who speaks a dialect or cannot read, an allergy that must not be mistranslated, an emergency: you pick a picture, it fills the screen along with the word written in the other person's language, and your phone can say it out loud. You hold up the screen. That is the whole thing. WHAT IS INSIDE • More than 500 clear pictures, drawn in a single style, sorted into 12 categories • Diets and allergies: peanut, gluten, shellfish, no pork, vegetarian • Health and emergencies: symptoms, pharmacy, doctor, police, ambulance • Food and drink, transport, accommodation, shopping, places, family: all the words of travel • Ten languages: French, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Arabic • For Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Arabic, the pronunciation written in Latin letters under each word • French and English are proofread; the other eight languages are machine-translated and proofread in upcoming updates, and the app says so plainly SHOW IT FULL SCREEN A picture or a whole card fills the screen with nothing around it, and the screen stays on while the other person reads. Swipe to move from one picture to the next. PREPARE YOUR CARDS BEFORE YOU GO A card gathers several pictures — "peanut allergy" + "severe" + "ambulance". Put your allergy card together calmly before you travel, or start from one of eight ready-made cards: allergy, gluten-free, vegetarian, halal, lost child, medical emergency… EMERGENCY NUMBERS, COUNTRY BY COUNTRY Police, ambulance, fire brigade: the emergency numbers for more than 80 countries, available offline, one tap to call. TRULY OFFLINE Everything is installed on your phone. On a plane, out of coverage, travelling without a data plan: the app behaves exactly the same. No account, no sign-up, no tracker. Your favourites, cards and searches never leave the device. WHO IT IS FOR • Travellers with allergies or specific diets, where a translation error is expensive • Families on the road: a child will point at a picture long before they will speak • Health and emergencies, when you need to be understood the first time • Carers, health workers and charities: these pictograms also work as a communication board for people with aphasia or autism, and for displaced people WHAT IT IS NOT No free-text translation, no live conversation, no camera translation. To hold a dialogue or read a sign, general-purpose translators do that job very well. Word Trotter works exactly where they stall: when you need to SHOW someone something.
