Solid naval warfare during the Golden Age of Sail
There is something to be said for turning broadside and pounding your opponent with cannon fire. King of Sails is an intuitive, fun, and exciting game. The visuals, audio, and game play are all well done, and the platform is stable and reliable. Yes, there are concerns when ships and Captains are mismatched in the same battle. Some possible solutions: - Each player on a winning team is rewarded extra silver and gold if their team wins. - Each player on a team is rewarded a pro rata share of the battle rewards earned by Captains ranked 15 or higher on their team. - If a Captain ranked 15 or higher is assigned to a team for an upcoming battle, then the game software should attempt to assign a Captain ranked 15 or higher to the other team. This allows everyone to benefit from having higher ranked Captains and stronger ships on their team. All of the Tampa Buccaneers earned extra rewards for having Tom Brady on the team. It should be the same for King of Sails.
If you don’t mind paying for some pretty expensive ships to guarantee a win 9/10 times. Other than that, I do agree with others that are saying that you earn virtual money slowly such as the gold and silver. It does feel like the only players you fight against are nothing but bots because it’s always the same type of ships you fight with on your team and the same for the team you are trying to fight. I think it’d be much better if real players were pitted against each other.
Other than that, it’s be pretty interesting to put together a campaign for us with preassigned ships to each segment of the campaign since assassins creed pirates was taken off. And even add sword fighting to the campaign (not multiplayer though).
Fun for a while, but then just frustrating
It starts off enjoyable. You play against players of mostly the same level. You win a few, you lose a few. If you’re any good you win more than you lose... but if you play long enough and don’t buy a ship or pay for in-game currency, you can forget about it being fair in any way. Eventually you’re always matched with players who’ve bought ships or in-game resources that so outclass you’re ships that you can’t hope to ever compete. You almost always lose the battle.
So, if you’re willing to spend some money in-game, it’ll be fun. If not, don’t bother. Eventually it’ll just be boring as your weaker ships quickly lose battle after battle after battle.
DEVELOPERS: Want to make a “freemium” MMPO game? Sure, paying for weapons (or ships, or in-game currency) should give you an advantage. If it’s such an overwhelming advantage that free players cannot win then the “free” players will just give up, and it won’t be “massive.”
