Present and organize your events directly, with quick filtering, zooming, highlighting, and navigation controls, or publish your work elsewhere with image and PDF export. Exchange event data using CSV import/export. Group your events into sections and subsections which can be rearranged or hidden. Automate your workflows and integrations with Shortcuts.
TimeStory is fast and simple enough to let you quickly capture rough ideas, and robust and flexible enough to let you build, refine, and publish even large, complex timelines.

more I've experimented with a number of project management tools including Asana, Trello, and others. But what I most need from these tools is a simple, intuitive, visual way to track the progress of my various client projects. I don't really need all the other collaboration tools expensive and bloated platforms provide, and none do a very good job with timelines anyway. Gave TimeStory a shot and it has been an amazing and infinitely more affordable solution for creating project timelines and tracking progress. It's super customizable, visually attractive, and suits my purposes perfectly. Lastly, the developer is incredible. Extremely responsive, and even takes feature requests seriously. Actually updated the program to incorporate a feature recommendation I made, and then notified me individually to let me know the feature had been added. Amazing, and very much appreciated.
Developer Response Thanks for the awesome review!

Why do Gantt charts have to be so text and formula heavy and unpleasant to look at? TimeStory solves that problem making planning accessible for the visually inclined. I have been looking for something like this for month and am thrilled to have found this app. My only critique would be that it would be nice for blocks of 1 day to be able to insert even 2 letters of text (rather than the '...'). Even when I shrink it down to 10pt text it still just shows the dots. And perhaps a little bit more flexibility on the points so that can fit into a single date rather than between two days (I use them as feedback points in my production schedule). Otherwise, brilliant!
Developer Response Thanks for the wonderful review, and for the suggestions! [Update, 4/29/21: In version 2.5, released a couple of days ago, I reduced the minimum padding around labels within an event graphic, based on your and others' feedback. In many cases, this will allow a couple more characters to show before truncating with the '...'.]

I have been looking for an app that can show on a timeline the components of my life, and this does it.Under one section called Family I have my parents, spouse, and kids spanned out on the timeline, providing a visual comparison of who lived when and for how long.I have another category called Employment with my career mapped out along the timeline.Another category is Education, showing which schools I attended.Another category is Houses, showing the addresses where I lived and when. The Travel category has my travels laid out on the timeline.Other categories are Cars, Motorcycles, Computers, Cameras.TimeStory is a very useful app and very different from other timeline apps I've used. It's easy to figure out, but the documentation and HELP is excellent. Best of all, the developer is quick to respond to suggestions so this app has a bright future. If you're not sure about spending the $$, then be sure to download the free trial app on the developer's website.
Developer Response Thank you for the great review! That's an interesting use of the app. And I also appreciate all the suggestions and input from you and others; it's been helpful.

I've tried every project management and gantt app on the market. They are all overly complicated. I've been forced to manually design timelines for years. While not easy, it gives me full control of graphics and is easy to use. Then I found TimeStory. TimeStory is the perfect timeline app: incredibly simple, intuitive, and powerful. Absolutely brilliant. The developer is responsive and dedicated to making great software. I use a lot different kinds of software in my job, and this is absolutely one of the best apps I've ever used.

Timelines with images in them get a big boost in performance with this update. They will load faster, editing and navigation will be quicker and smoother (especially on older hardware), the app will use less memory, and the files will usually be much smaller than before.
Also fixed a bug where a closed timeline would lose your scroll position when you reopened it.
4.2 Sep 8
4.1 brings big improvements for building and working with information-rich timelines or advanced import/export workflows!
Pop-out Description Fields: Events have always had a “Description” field where you could enter any text or notes, but it was always confined to the Inspector sidebar attached to the window. Now, click on the “pop-out” button and it will detach into a separate, fully resizable, text editor window, where you can comfortably edit or read even long-form text.
Custom Event Properties: Add your own fields to your events, from “Assignee” to “Percent Complete” to “Source” to anything else. They show up in the Inspector, just like the built-in fields, they are nicely formatted in the Event Details view, and you can use them as filtering criteria, including both exact matches and comparisons like “contains” or “less than”. They also support CSV import/export, so if you’re working with external data sources, you can keep all your properties together.
Improved Filtering UI: A pull-down menu next to the Event Filter input field lets you quickly add advanced filtering criteria like date ranges, custom property checks, tags, sections, and more.
Unique Event IDs for Import/Export: Export a set of events with unique IDs, modify that export, then re-import it and update the same events in place using TimeStory-managed unique ID fields.

4.1 Feb 15
This small update fixes a few bugs:
- On macOS Tahoe, color pickers in the Inspector, such as for backgrounds or event graphics, were mis-aligned with their labels (offset a bit down); this lines everything back up.
- If you perform a CSV Import with the "Update existing events with the same title" option enabled, new dates and other properties from the CSV file are applied to your existing events. In prior versions, however, your events might also get rearranged vertically, as the importer would reassign them to rows in your timeline based on their order in the CSV file. This update fixes that to leave them in their existing rows, while still arranging new events in input order.
- If you're working with BC dates on a Mac set up for non-English date formats, the Inspector date fields would still show "BC", as if your Mac were set for English, but would require you to type in the normal equivalent for your language, a very confusing situation.
4.0.3 Jan 27
This update fixes a couple of bugs with text entry in the Inspector.
4.0.2 Jan 13
4.0.1 fixes a single bug in 4.0. When using the arrow keys to move an event around, the tooltip would flash with the wrong date. (It would show the date you were moving from, not the date you were moving to, which was very confusing.)
4.0, just prior, was a major release, with a UI refresh and some new features and bug fixes:
- New dedicated controls for time scale and document zoom levels make them easier to adjust
- New Event Lock to prevent accidental edits to selected events
- Fixes to printing, templates, ancient date entry, and more
4.0.1 12/19/2025
This update brings some user interface improvements, bug fixes, and new features, and updates the app for macOS Tahoe.
- New dedicated controls for time scale and document zoom levels make them easier to adjust
- New Event Lock to prevent accidental edits to selected events
- Fixes to printing, templates, ancient date entry, and more
This release is simultaneous with version 2.0 of the iPad/iPhone edition of TimeStory, and shares many improvements with that app. Find full details, and a free trial, at https://timestory.app/release-notes
4.0 12/16/2025
Turn on the new Dateline to get a vertical line, and current date tip, that follows your mouse as you move it around the timeline. Use this to clearly see where you are, and what events lie on that date, on a dense timeline.
Build even longer prehistoric timelines, with date support extended back to 1 million years BC, and improvements to year number displays.
See more information in the Details pop-up for events and sections, which has been cleaned up, extended, and made much better at handling long description text.
This release also fixes a handful of bugs. PDF/PNG export had been sometimes making unwanted adjustments to your gridline spacing; links in event titles were using black text even over dark backgrounds; and the color picker in the Inspector was sometimes resulting in incorrect colors when clicking in the In This Document section.

3.10 07/08/2025
This is a pure bug-fix release, resolving these issues:
- Starting with macOS Sequoia 15.5, some of the toolbar items stopped working: the zoom slider would not appear in the “Zoom” pop-up menu, and the “Timeline” pop-up menu (years, months, etc.) did nothing. (Both functions still worked via other means like the main menu; this was just a problem in the toolbar.)
- When dismissing the Quick Entry input, if one of the text fields was focused, its focus highlight (blue border) briefly would move up into the toolbar area before disappearing.
3.9.3 05/19/2025
This update fixes a bug that affected users with certain calendar or region settings on their Mac; in those cases, Go to Date, Go to Today, and Inspector date pickers would display and choose incorrect dates.
3.9.2 03/26/2025
This update addresses a printing-related problem found soon after releasing V3.9: with some time scales and options, when you printed, the timeline header at the top of each page might be partially filled in, or might be entirely missing. It contains no other changes.
V3.9, released a couple of days ago, brought a collection of great new features for styling and organizing your timelines:
- Collapse any section or subsection to a thin bar, hiding its contents with a click, then expand it again with another.
- Set the opacity of weekend, date range, and other background colors, from 0 to 100%, so overlapping highlights and backgrounds remain visible (and look better!)
- Apply new striped patterns to event bars and lines, to vary their look or mark them as tentative.
- Bookmark any event so you can quickly scroll to it, no matter how big your timeline is.

3.9 03/11/2025
This update fixes a bug in Quick Entry, Go to Date, and other places: in some languages, when typing in a numeric date separated by “.” characters (e.g. 28.1.2025), the app would previously misinterpret the date and reject it with an “out of range” message.
3.8.2 01/29/2025
3.8.1 fixes a bug in date inputs that appeared on Macs configured for certain specific languages and regions. This could affect dates in the Inspector, Quick Entry, and other places, in some cases leading to a hang or crash. It contains no other updates over 3.8, which was a large update filled with improvements and greatly-increased historical date support.
3.8.1 11/16/2024
Working on timelines of history or even prehistory? The biggest (but not only) change in this update is a major improvement in handling of ancient dates, which can now range back to 500,000 BC, with improved date entry, formatting, and performance.
But everyone, no matter what kind of timelines you build, will find improvements, including:
- Improvements to editing, including eliminating unwanted scrolling when placing new events
- Fixes to the behavior of deleting a nonempty section
- The date-range highlighter can now be canceled just by clicking the header
- Fixes to the Find Events action in Shortcuts
- Fixes to the use of modifier keys while dragging for macOS Sequoia

3.8 11/06/2024
This release adds the ability to protect any timeline with a password, to help you add a layer of privacy to sensitive or personal files. (Take care not to forget a password you set; there's no way to recover a lost password!)
This update also fixes a couple of bugs with section-level standard event text colors and custom timeline view renaming.
Find full details on these changes at https://timestory.app/release-notes/
3.7 07/07/2024
This update brings a number of small improvements and fixes.
- Fixed the display of certain SVG icons which used a less-common but valid number format internally.
- Added several new event-styling column types to CSV import/export, including Bar Type, Title Position, and Point Icon Height.
- Added a new explicit Point or Span column type to CSV import/export, as an alternative to the current approach of depending on a blank End Date to indicate a point event.
- Made it possible to represent the Original Image Color option for multicolor point event icons in CSV files (as a blank color field).

3.6.2 04/18/2024
Fixed a crash which only occurred on recent versions of macOS Sonoma, and only for certain document layouts. The crash could occur when editing filters or sections, and sometimes in other cases.
3.6.1 04/09/2024
3.6 brings a batch of feature updates, including:
- Date-range highlights on events can now be limited to one section, to below the header, or to just the header.
- The document zoom level is now controllable from a slider, letting you choose any value from 25% to 400%, though the existing fixed levels are still available.
- Long titles in left-side section headers now word-wrap if needed.
This release also fixes a some bugs. Notably, rapid shift+click multi-select is now more consistent, section title color changes now always take effect right away, and a significant slowdown was fixed when editing a multi-line event title over a document with weekend shading enabled.
Check out https://timestory.app/release-notes/ for full, illustrated details!
3.6 02/03/2024
3.5.3 fixes two bugs:
- When adding new point event icons, it was possible (but thankfully not common) to get into a state where the icon window and the Inspector's icon picker both stopped working! This update prevents that from happening and, if it had already happened, restores the use of the icons you’d previously added.
- TimeStory was displaying certain SVG icons incorrectly, with extra overlaid content; this update now displays those icons correctly.
3.5.3 01/03/2024
This update fixes two important bugs.
- In 3.5.1, on macOS versions prior to Sonoma, when you completely hid the timeline header, you were unable to select or edit *any* timeline contents!
- In some cases, when you click on the app and it automatically pops open a new, untitled document, it would not use the correct default timeline template, starting you with a style different from the one you get by explicitly choosing File > New.
3.5.2 11/30/2023
This small update fixes some display issues around section headers, the Sections dialog, and the timeline header.
Full details at: https://timestory.app/releases/3.5.1.html
3.5.1 10/31/2023
Automatic text colors are now much smarter and more precise, changing color within event titles as your text passes over lighter or darker backgrounds. With recent features like weekend shading, old features like time-range highlighting, and the new-to-3.5 ability for "inside" text to flow out of a span event graphic, this keeps your event titles readable on even the most text-heavy and complex timelines.
More details, and screenshots of these changes in action, at https://timestory.app/releases/3.5.html
3.5 09/15/2023
- New: Give weekends a different background color on any daily or weekly timeline view
- New: Give attached images borders, and draw lines to their events
- Fixed: Regional date format overrides are now properly saved in your document
There are a few more minor updates, as well. Find full details, and screenshots, at https://timestory.app/releases/3.4.html
3.4 08/11/2023
3.3.2 fixes a small bug, speeds up large timeline updates during editing, and brings a couple of other minor improvements.
- If you used a built-in timeline configuration (years, quarters, months, weeks, or days), but customized the labeling (for example by changing “day of month” to “month and day”), there was a bug that didn’t keep that change when you again loaded the document later. Fixed.
- On a large, colorful, or text-heavy timeline, things like animated timescale changes or drag-and-drop editing are now faster and smoother, thanks to some performance improvements in the code which draws the timeline.
- The automatic text color logic would sometimes choose black text over some dark colors where white text would have much better contrast; this has been adjusted.
- CSV files exported from TimeStory now work better when opened in Microsoft Excel. If you’ve ever done a CSV export and seen strange characters while loading into Excel, this is for you. If not, because you use Numbers or something else, this won’t affect you at all.
Find a little more detail, along with complete release history, at https://timestory.app/releases/3.3.2.html
3.3.2 05/24/2023
This small update brings a couple of fixes to CSV Export.
- CSV export settings are now preserved per document, so it's easier to repeatedly export as you update your timeline.
- A bug was fixed which would sometimes result in exports with incorrect columns (often "Empty" instead of the desired type).
Check out https://timestory.app/releases/3.3.1.html for a little more details, as well as a full release history.
3.3.1 05/11/2023
Timelines with images in them get a big boost in performance with this update. They will load faster, editing and navigation will be quicker and smoother (especially on older hardware), the app will use less memory, and the files will usually be much smaller than before.
Also fixed a bug where a closed timeline would lose your scroll position when you reopened it.
