Description

Backtrack is a Mac menu bar app that lets you record all those conversations, class lectures, calls, meetings, and brainstorming sessions that you forgot to click the record button for.

Backtrack is always recording locally, and over-writes a 60-minute window (or up to 5 hours) of audio & screen over and over throughout the day, on your Mac. As soon as something happens that you realize you should have recorded, just drag the UFO icon down to the time you need to Backtrack to, and the app will capture the last "X" amount of time you dragged to (After installing, the app will appear as a UFO in your menu bar).

Backtrack 2.0 now captures screen, as well as audio, and gives the option to upload to the cloud for fast sharing or download directly.

NOTHING touches the internet unless you intentionally hit the "Upload to Backtrack" button in the app. Likewise the "Download" button on the preview state is how you save locally to your machine.

Uploaded files will appear in your Home View in the app, whereas recordings saved directly to your machine will save to the location you choose.

To access the home view, settings, or quit the app, right-click (two fingers click) the UFO icon in your menu bar (top of your screen).

The concept is cool, but... [UPDATED]

[UPDATE] - It looks like my problem was that I installed Vanilla (a menubar managing utility) and for some reason it hid the Backtrack icon entirely. Fixed now, and it works great! If you are reading this review and happen to use Vanilla as well, consider this a heads up.

Original review:
This app doesn't work on my macbook pro, or I think I can't use it properly. It runs in the background, but the icon doesn't show up in my menu bar. I paid $1.99, so it's not a big hit to my wallet or anything, but I would like to use an app I paid for. Perhaps this is just an issue with macOS Big Sur? (I am currently running version 11.1). Hopefully this is just an issue with macOS Big Sur or a simple bug fix.

Developer Response ,

We definitely work with BigSur. You may just need a menubar icon management app like Bartender or to open another app with a shorter amount of menu items at the top so that our icon shows. Its probably just off screen which happens when macOS has too many menu bar items active.

Amazing

Update: I was really not a fan of the app when it got sold and turned into something totally different. It used to be a very simple utility, but Backtrack 2.0 seems like it's trying to be a whole SaaS like Loom. However, I do concede that this new version has gotten updated to a state that still lets me quickly save audio (it didn't at first). That's really all I want. I don't need AI, screen recording, transcription, or workspaces, but it's nice to be able to disable all those features.

Original review: Life saving app. I'd give 6 stars if I could. Just don't tell your coworkers and friends you have this installed :)

The best way to replay anything happening on your computer!

If you've ever wished you could go back in time, Backtrack will help you do that. Did you type something on your computer and lost it? Now you can hop in your time machine and see what you wrote. Did you have a Zoom conversation with someone and missed something important they said? Going back in time to watch the conversation is a piece of cake with Backtrack. Get it. You'll thank me!
