New in 3.2: show Mic Drop in your Dock, with a badge whenever your mic is live. Plus a resizable Mic Check, Google Meet sync, and 10 languages!
Thousands of people rely on Mic Drop to keep them quiet during meetings, podcasts, and even online magic shows.
The premise is simple: mute and unmute yourself using a keyboard shortcut or a menu bar control. (Or AppleScript, or your Stream Deck, or your AirPods!) It works with every meeting app out there—from Meet to Slack, FaceTime to Teams.
No need to have your meeting app open—you can mute and unmute any time, from any app (or from across the room, with your AirPods). And thanks to the menu bar icon, audio and visual notifications, the floating Mic Check window, and an optional Dock badge, you’ll always know whether you’re muted.
New in 3.2:
- Show Mic Drop in your Dock, with a badge whenever your mic is live.
- Resize Mic Check to suit you, from a tiny floating mic to a wide banner or a huge “On Air” sign.
- Keep Google Meet in sync with our free Chrome extension.
- Mic Drop now speaks 10 languages.
Features:
- A custom keyboard shortcut that works in any app.
- Push-to-talk and hold-to-mute.
- AirPods Press to Mute: press the stem of your AirPods to toggle your mic.
- Mic Check: a floating “On Air” window with live audio levels.
- Shows your mic status in the menu bar, with a choice of icons in color or grayscale.
- Audio and visual notifications.
- Automatically keeps you muted (or unmuted!) when you change audio devices.
- Quick microphone switching from the menu bar.
- Stream Deck plugin and AppleScript support.
- Warns you if macOS can’t mute your device. Be confident you’re really muted!
- Respects your privacy. Mic Drop never records you, and only asks for microphone access if you want live audio levels in Mic Check.
- Hand-coded by a duo of dedicated indie developers who fix bugs and add features based on your feedback.
Free and Super Pro:
Muting and unmuting from the menu bar is free, forever. A one-time Super Pro purchase unlocks keyboard shortcuts, push-to-talk, AirPods Press to Mute, Mic Check, notifications, Stream Deck and AppleScript support, extra menu bar icons, and more. Try them all free for 30 days.
Because Mic Drop mutes your audio at the system level, it works with any app you can imagine. We’ve tested it with:
- Zoom
- Microsoft Teams
- Google Meet
- Slack
- FaceTime
- Discord
- Telegram
- and many more!
It just works. No matter where you’re meeting, Mic Drop’s got you covered.
A note on hardware compatibility:
Mic Drop works with just about any audio device out there, including Bluetooth and wired headphones. But a few devices, mostly niche USB audio interfaces and webcams, can’t be muted by macOS, so Mic Drop can’t control them. Mic Drop will warn you if it detects one, and our support site lists the problem devices we know about.

Does not work for all usb mics

I have an external usb microphone. After setting up Mic Drop for PTT, I thought I was safe leaving my mic unmuted in my video meeting. As I was screaming at my kids, everyone at work heard me even though the mic drop icon showed as muted. After talking to the developer, I learned that some obscure USB mics or audio interfaces do things very atypically and just aren't compatible with Mic Drop. They have a list of supported hardware, which I recommend checking out first if you're using a USB mic. Either way, the developer was prompt to respond and help clear things up. I give 4 stars for the superb support in getting issues figured out!

Oh no, we're so sorry to hear that!Could you please let us know the USB microphone you use that couldn't be muted (email us at micdrop@octopusthink.com)? We maintain a list of these on our website (https://getmicdrop.com/help/hardware-issues), but we also display a notification on-screen when we detect a mic that cannot be muted by Mic Drop. Note this is a driver issue with the device and not something we can fix, but we do display a notice that the device can't be muted. If that notification didn't appear your device might be falsely reporting that it's compatible with macOS's system-level mute, so we'd love to know your device so we can warn other users about it.We also have a workaround to allow USB mics to be muted using Loopback on our website.
Great App

I've been using this with Zoom and MS Teams for work-related conference calls, and I also support committee members who use Zoom for public meetings. Even though Zoom and Teams both have built-in mute toggle, and Zoom also has built-in Push-To-Talk (PTT), I prefer using mic drop as my microphone control because I can use the same key combos to mute in different apps, and I always know for sure when I am muted because the status is shown in the macOS menu bar. While apps like Zoom and Teams do have mute indicators, having the status in the macOS menu bar works better for me because it's always visible, regardless of what is foremost on my display. The committee members that I support overwhelmingly prefer the Status Window in mic drop to know when they are toggled on or off. When I attend a meeting where I expect to speak a lot, I use PTT with a key combination that I prefer. When I attend a meeting where I am mostly silent, I toggle mute using the icon in the macOS menu bar. Having that menu bar icon status gives me assurance that my background noises won't be heard on the conference.
Stellar piece of software

Once combined with something like Karabiner, which can map a mouse button to keyboard input, this thing works just fine. Unfortunately it doesn’t have built-in support for mouse bindings; it assumes you want to use the keyboard to mute and unmute for some reason.I’ve been using voice chat for two decades and never once have I wanted to take my hands off the mouse or movement keys to mute/unmute.Apart from needing minor workarounds to do its job, it’s pretty nice. The visual, audio, and menu bar indicators are super helpful to prevent "sorry, I was muted" in the middle of your game. This is one of the only solutions to allow you to use something like Vencord that doesn’t have global input abilities.
Just What I Needed!

As a consultant, I regularly switch between web conference services (Webex, Teams, Zoom, etc.) based on whether it's me or my customers setting it up. Some services have a mute shortcut, some don't. Most you have to be in the app to do it, and I'm regularly using other apps during the call so their shortcuts don’t work. This covers all bases and then some! My only request would be the option to have an audio feedback tone when muting or unmuting so that I know with confidence I am muted without leaving a full-screen app or Workspace and conversely I know I’ve unmuted to speak.
