I loved the Levelator app from The Conversations Network. As a podcaster, it was especially helpful surfacing voices from a conference or crowded room when it was impossible to mic everyone up. Even after they stopped updating it, I used it frequently. I held onto the app for as long as possible, until finally MacOS wouldn't support it. I'm so glad to see it back, and still free. Yes, it does just one thing, but that one thing is all I needed it to do!

Thanks for this great free utility! The one thing that is really needed is the ability to set a path for all converted files. As it works now, If I drag multiple files in for processing, Levelator asks me to set the name and path for every single file as it moves through the batch job. This makes dropping a bunch of files to batch process a tedious experience. Hope this is helpful!

I've been audio engineering for over 15 years, so I'm not approaching this as a someone who needs a simple solution. This app is technically for leveling multiple voices at different volume levels. (Or, even just one voice recorded at different levels, I suppose.) However, I noticed that it actually made a bit of a mess of the loudness normalization in the process, and somehow added bad sound effects and a loud noise floor to my audio files which had a noise of 0. Oddly enough it increased the dynamic range in some parts, and decreased it in others, and in the end I have to re-compress, limit, and normalize the files to get them back to the loudness level they were at before running them through Levelator. The app decreased the average loudness, and RMS power by 2 dB, and increased the dynamics. I could see using this if you have a bad recording where one speaker is much louder than the other. But just be sure to make sure you compress, limit, and normalize afterward to make sure you get the loudness level you want. And then you'll have to run some kind of noise removal aftward as well, since this app added a noise floor that was not desireable at all, and was some what random. It also created some clicking sounds that I have no idea where they came from after comparing my original file to the leveled file. I really wish it wouldn't decrease the loudness and increase the dynamic range. It's a little odd the way it does it too. It seems completely random. But the deal breaker is the fact that it boosted a non-existent noise floor and actually added background noise, as well as strange audio artifacts like clicks here and there. I think this app is decent for non-professionals, and people who don't care about really clean audio. Or people who don't mind fixing the problems it creates. I could see using it in a pinch to spead up the process of leveling uneven audio files. But aside from that I wouldn't touch it.

I was disheartend to discover that the last macOS version of The Levelator wasn't 64-bit clean and thus woudln't work with macOS Catalina.This app is an indispensable tool for anyone doing voice recording, especially for broadcasters — such as this writer — and podcasters. No other audio leveling tool, even the overpriced Auphonic susbcription schdme, matches it.The new version has a spiffed up interface, and is highly recommended.If I had a wish list, I'd ask for a noise reduction feature, but doing that automaticaly would be a far greater reach. But there's always hope.
