Do I need an account?
No. There is no login and no sign-up.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the voice is installed on your iPhone.
How much can I use for free?
5,000 characters a day, plus 2,000 per short video, up to five videos a day.
Where do the voices come from?
From iOS itself. The app puts the compact system voices — the ones people recognise as the classic robotic reading voice — one tap away, and shows you the exact route in Settings to download more. It is not the original engine from those years: that one cannot be licensed for an iPhone app, and we would rather tell you here than have you find out after installing.
Can it read a photo of a page?
Yes. Camera OCR recognises the text and reads it aloud.
Who is it for?
Students, commuters, language learners, people with dyslexia or low vision, and anyone who would rather listen than read.

Thanks for the review. Heads-up on what's coming: the voice you pick is now kept when you reopen the app (it used to fall back to an English voice), every voice says whether it is male or female, and the classic voice is one tap away.

Fair, and part of it was our fault: the voice you picked was lost every time the app closed and it fell back to a default English voice, so most people never actually heard the voice they chose. That's fixed in the next version. The natural-sounding ones are Apple's Enhanced and Premium voices — they're free but have to be downloaded in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices, and the app now says so.

The row that tells you where to download more voices was showing the iOS Settings route in English, with the menu names of an English phone. Now it is written out in your language, with the names Apple actually uses — so the route you read is the route you see on screen.
Also: the same route appeared four times in the app with four different wordings. Now there is one.
