- Use Statement
- Reflex is a software application that uses the camera and illumination of a compatible mobile device to measure, by reflected light, the width or diameter of the pupil of the eye.
Reflex performs serial measurements of pupil diameter across a recorded image sequence, before, during, and after a light stimulus delivered by the device. From these diameter measurements Reflex reports quantitative pupil parameters, which may include maximum diameter, minimum diameter, percent change in diameter, time to onset of constriction, average and maximum constriction velocity, and dilation velocity, together with the corresponding diameter-versus-time record. Results may be displayed, stored, and exported for review.
Reflex is intended to be used by trained healthcare professionals for the objective measurement and documentation of pupil diameter and pupillary reactivity in patients 18 years of age and older, in clinical and other professional healthcare environments, on patients whose eyes can be positioned and visualized as described in the labeling.
Reflex provides pupil measurement data only. It does not provide a diagnosis, does not identify or screen for any specific disease or condition, and is not intended to replace clinical examination or professional judgment. Clinical decisions should not be made on the basis of Reflex output alone.
Rx only. Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a licensed healthcare practitioner. - Safety Information
- CONTRAINDICATIONS
Reflex is contraindicated in patients with a known history of photosensitive epilepsy or seizures provoked by bright or flashing light, and for use on an eye with an open globe, recent penetrating injury, or recent intraocular surgery unless directed by the clinician.
WARNINGS
Light exposure. Reflex emits a bright light stimulus toward the eye. Do not measure more frequently than described in the Instructions for Use. The stimulus may cause temporary afterimages, glare, or reduced vision; advise the patient not to drive until vision returns to normal. Discontinue use if the patient reports ocular pain or persistent visual disturbance.
Not a diagnostic device. Reflex reports pupil measurements only. It does not detect, diagnose, screen for, or rule out any disease or condition. Do not initiate, withhold, or modify treatment based on Reflex output alone.
Not for continuous monitoring. Reflex provides discrete, point-in-time measurements. Do not use it for continuous, automated, or unattended monitoring, or as an alarm for patient deterioration.
Device use. Reflex is non-contact; do not let the device or accessories touch the eye or eyelid. Clean and disinfect between patients per facility policy. Use only the device models and OS versions listed in the Instructions for Use, and not a device with a cracked, obstructed, or soiled lens or light source, or one that has been jailbroken or otherwise modified.
PRECAUTIONS
Measurement accuracy. Results may be inaccurate or unobtainable in eyes with an irregular pupil, coloboma, iridectomy, posterior synechiae, traumatic mydriasis, prior iris or corneal surgery, dense corneal opacity or edema, or mature cataract. Reflex derives absolute pupil size from an assumed horizontal iris diameter, so absolute values may be inaccurate where iris diameter is atypical; relative measures such as percent change are less affected. Reflex has not been validated in patients under 18 years of age.
Conditions of use. Remove eyeglasses; tinted or cosmetic contact lenses may prevent reliable detection. Ptosis, blepharospasm, nystagmus, blinking, or inability to maintain fixation may prevent a valid measurement. Measure under the lighting conditions specified in the Instructions for Use.
Interpretation. Mydriatics, miotics, opioids, anticholinergics, sedatives, anesthetics, alcohol, fatigue, prior light exposure, and arousal state all alter pupil size and reactivity. For serial comparison, use the same device model, test type, and ambient conditions; Reflex values may not be interchangeable with those from other pupillometers. Do not interpret a measurement flagged as not meeting quality criteria; repeat it. Time-based parameters are limited by the video frame interval.
Data protection. Reflex records images of the eye, which may be protected health information. Secure the device with a passcode and encryption and handle results per facility privacy and security policies. - Instructions for Use
