True Fake wurde 2020 von dem Leipziger Studio ROTxBLAU in Kooperation mit der Bildungskampagne „spreuXweizen" entwickelt. Um die Dynamiken von Meinungsbildung darzustellen, haben sich die Entwickler*innen von Ökosystemen in der Natur inspirieren lassen.
True Fake wurde in der Open Source Game Engine Godot entwickelt und ist kostenfrei erhältlich.
Das Projekt wurde gefördert vom Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend im Rahmen des Bundesprogramms "Demokratie leben!", sowie von der AMADEU ANTONIO Stiftung und dem sächsischen Kultusministerium.
