UPDATED! DeepL (Pro), how I love thee, let me count the ways: This is my favorite translator, with more accurate word definitions than I’ve found elsewhere (proven in my language classes, translating scores of documents I submitted for my residency permit, and for communication with my non-English speaking family), including suggested variations on word and phrase translations. The addition of features found in the other big translator—scanned live translation, photos, documents—means I can FINALLY delete that other app, much to my delight! If you use the online/desktop versions of this app, DeepL also has an editable and recallable glossary, and for those with a Pro account: formal and informal translation options (such as found in languages like German). You can even click on a word or phrase in the translation to trigger a pop up of suggested edits. Another bonus: the makers have designed this app with privacy in mind, collecting no personally identifying data. And one more thing: the big-name translator uses almost four times as much memory as this app. Thank you DeepL team!
Really good at what it does, but the free limits are annoying

This is one of those apps that feels better than a lot of translation apps the moment you start using it. The design is clean, fast, and not cluttered, which I really appreciate. It usually feels polished, and the translations often sound more natural and less robotic than what I get from some other apps. What I like most is that it feels simple. Open app, paste text, get a result quickly. No mess, no confusing layout, no feeling like I have to fight the app. For normal real-life use, that matters a lot. If I needed to understand a message, translate a paragraph, or check wording, I would trust this app more than most. What keeps it from being a 5 for me is that the free version can feel a little restrictive, and that gets annoying fast if you use translation regularly. It’s a very useful app, but it definitely nudges you toward paying. Also, for very short, casual translations, the difference between this and other free apps may not always feel big enough to justify that frustration. It is polished, but not “perfect.” Sometimes I also wish it felt a little more generous before hitting limits. Overall, I personally keep using it, especially because the core experience is strong and it feels like a serious app instead of a sloppy one. But I use it with the mindset of “great translator, slightly annoying free experience,” not “perfect no-complaints app.
Latest Version Lost Critical Functionality

This app isn’t cheap. But I have found it worth the price tag as its translation abilities from English to Portuguese are the best I’ve experienced. I live in Portugal and am very dependent on this app. But, sometimes it misses the right words and gets it all wrong. I have found its dictionary function invaluable to double-check certain words, so I can be sure its right before I send a message. So I was absolutely SHOCKED when this functionality disappeared recently, making the app no better than any other app (most far less expensive) out there. I sent a message and was informed that the dictionary function indeed has been disabled for the phone app. Why? This functionality was so useful and to disable it makes no sense. Also, its not what I purchased. I now need to go to a different app to look up certain words, which is ridiculous given that DeepL clearly has the ability to offer this as a phone app. Many of us use translation apps on our phones, not desktops, so this is very very disappointing and makes me lose confidence that with a paid subscription DeepL won’t make other decisions that take functionality away. I won’t continue paying for this app as it’s considerably less robust than when I purchased it almost a year ago.
completely indispensable for French
AC/EC
Impossible to say enough good things about this app, which I’ve mostly used on my iPhone. A quick list that comes to mind (before I get back to using it!!!!) is: the ability to look at & switch between the “tu” and “vous” forms when writing emails & texts; the Share function is exceptionally handy for reading emails, texts, and web pages; the text translation from photos / the camera is soooooo helpful when wishing to read signs, letters, bills, and packaging at the grocery (and other kinds of) store(s); the translation of PDFs is RIDICULOUSLY HELPFUL for those moments in life when the manufacturers of both your washing machine & electric range don’t have instruction manuals available in English because their given model is only sold in the French market. Very truly: I could go on & on, but suffice it to say: as a person living in France & speaking limited French & trying to learn the language better: DeepL is an absolutely indispensable tool— UN GRAND MERCI À TOUTE LA FAMILLE DEEPL !!!!!!! / EIN GROSSES DANKESCHÖN AN DIE GESAMTE FAMILIE DEEPL !!!!!!!
No big news this time, but that’s only because we’ve been working hard on improving your experience:
- Fixed several bugs
- Enhanced the usability
- Planned and designed further for the future of translation
