Having big emotions is part of growing up for any child. But for kids who learn and think differently, they may be more frequent and intense. This can be overwhelming for both the parent and the child.
That’s where the Understood app comes in. This Behavior Tracker was developed by psychologists to help parents understand and effectively respond to their child’s big emotions. It’s based on proven approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Log your child’s challenging behaviors to get personalized insights, learn new strategies, and track your child’s progress — all at your own pace and on your own schedule.
▶ WHAT TO EXPECT ◀
[ DEVELOPED BY PSYCHOLOGISTS ]
• Our Behavior Tracker and lessons were developed by psychologists and are grounded in science-based approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). They were designed to help parents of kids with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning and thinking differences manage outbursts and big emotions.
[ BEHAVIOR TRACKER ]
• In just a few clicks, log your child’s challenging behaviors using the Behavior Tracker. See patterns emerge that’ll give you clues about the root causes.
[ TAILORED INSIGHTS ]
• The more you log in the Behavior Tracker, the more personalized insights you’ll get. Insights help you identify common situations and share tips to address them — so you can see improvement in your child’s behavior over time.
[ SKILLBUILDING LESSONS ]
• Struggling to understand your child’s behavior? Learn techniques and practice new skills developed by psychologists. Figure out what your child is trying to tell you. Then you can decide on the best way to respond.
[ GAIN NEW PERSPECTIVES ]
• Feel closer to your child and gain new perspectives on why they act out. It may have more to do with their learning and thinking differences (ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) than you might realize.
[ GET REAL-TIME GUIDANCE ]
• Get answers in seconds, tailored advice or a quick role-play session to prep for tough moments. The Understood Assistant provides real-time guidance to help you confidently apply new strategies to your unique family situations.
[ INCREASE CONFIDENCE ]
• Parenting is chaotic enough. Gain confidence supporting your child when they have big emotions or outbursts. Use new skills and strategies, made just for you.
[ DE-ESCALATION TECHNIQUES ]
• Emotional regulation skills can help you tame outbursts and meltdowns as they happen. With practice, your responses could even prevent them from happening in the future.
[ PRACTICE NEW SKILLS ]
• Put your new skills into practice. And continue to log behaviors to see how new strategies are helping improve your child’s behavior, or to get a refresher on skills you’ve learned.

Love this new app by the folks at Understood. I’ve been researching adhd on my own and found understood through articles on how adhd appears in early teens. This app helps me find other parents who’ve gone through this process of getting accommodations or helping their children in school! Love it(Update: please feel free to use my review for testimonials. I’d only ask to keep it anonymous. Thank you.)

Great content but App functions need work!

I think some of the content could be very useful, but it’s difficult to access. I’d like to try it again after the next update. Device is an iPhone 12 with iOS 15.6.1So far the issues encountered are: 1) I made a post to a group yesterday. Today it says I have a comment, but I haven’t been able to access/see it. When I click on the post from the feed it doesn’t show any comments, it only gives me the option to make a comment. 2) There is an issue when trying to view or download the printable resources. It requests an email to subscribe to emails or to log in. If you’ve joined the app via Google sign in there’s an error message that says “let the developer know that this app doesn’t comply with Google security…blah blah blah”. I’ve tried emailing and texting it to myself which just opens it up in the app and I keep encountering the same issue 3) I highly recommend adding a tech support link or adding a group/thread for people to ask tech related questions in the actual app, vs needing to go back to the App Store to find how to communicate with the developer. The only reason I’m taking the time to do this is because I feel the content could be helpful/great! But the format and interface is lacking.

Very overwhelming

It’s clear that the people who created this site want to be helpful. But they missed the boat. When one has dyslexia, they have trouble navigating the written word, and that is this entire app. Not one opportunity for voice to text or any videos. I didn’t give it one star because they do try to block the different topics so it’s not horrible to navigate. But there are a lot of questions posted by parents, and it’s difficult to find the experts who are actually giving advice versus people just sharing their experience. Also, the advice is pretty much anything you get anywhere on the Internet. I feel bad giving a poor review, because you can tell the experts care. But time would be better spent advocating for more streamlined support than passing out generic advice on an overwhelming platform.
Great app!

Having 4 kids makes everything feel impossible sometimes. It’s hard to remember who did what. This app helps me track each of their meltdowns, helps me learn different parenting strategies. & now that my second child is in school, her teachers think she has dyslexia.. the app is helping with that too. Apparently I knew almost nothing about it. It has taught me a lot. I wish the app was more aesthetically pleasing. The profile icons are a little bland & it doesn’t give you the option to add your own. But it’s not a big deal & doesn’t affect using the app. Awesome app! 10/10
