Version 4 is here: faster layouts, per-part grain locks and edge banding, plus cut-by-cut measurements you can follow at the saw.
SmartCut is a cutlist optimizer for iPhone and iPad. Enter your parts and the sheets or lengths you can buy, and it works out how to cut them with the least waste.
You get the cutting diagrams, the number of sheets you need, where every offcut falls, and a cut-by-cut sequence you can follow at the saw.
MATERIALS
Sheet materials such as plywood, MDF, chipboard, acrylic, glass and sheet metal, and linear stock such as construction timber, bar, pipe and extrusion. Work in decimals or fractions, in whichever units you use.
CUT TYPES
• Guillotine — for saws that cut edge to edge in a straight line, such as a table saw or beam saw. Choose length cuts for ripping, or width cuts for cross-cutting on a mitre saw or a cross-cut sled.
• Efficiency — the default. Prioritises the fewest cuts and the least waste, ideal for a jigsaw, laser cutter or CNC.
REAL-WORLD DETAIL
The plan matches how the material will actually be cut:
• Blade width, so the kerf is not quietly ignored
• Grain direction, with a per-part lock to length or width
• Edge banding on any side of a part
• Stock trim, to skip damaged or unsquare edges
• Infinite stock, when you can buy as many sheets as you need
FEATURES
• Fast and accurate layouts
• Sheet / 2D / boards / panels
• Linear / 1D / bars / rods
• Decimals and fractions, with quick fraction entry
• Colour-coded materials, so a mixed job stays readable
• Stack identical layouts
• Save and reopen projects
• Export to PDF to print for the workshop
AT THE SAW
Step through the cuts one at a time, with measurements shown from both sides so you can check yourself against either edge. Or print the PDF and take it to the bench.

Great app a new update took away a crucial feature
BalletBallerz
This app has saved me countless dollars in product and time cutting parts and pieces for cabinetry and furniture I make. However, apparently in the new update, you cannot use voice dictation. That made answering in all of my measurements extremely quick. I’m not sure why that feature went away. Please bring it back, cut list optimizer!!
Developer Response
Thank you for your feedback, really appreciate it. I’ll do my best to add this back in the next update.
Very nice

A quick simple way to optimize a cut list. It’s very intuitive with ability to use fraction or decimals. You can export as a pdf which solves the only drawback I’ve seen and that is you can’t save a file online or within the app so if you change something you’d need to input the data again. The app allows you to define the stock size and will add more stock if your original piece isn't sufficient. It displays the layout view and shows which pieces should be cut in order. Overall it works as advertised and is easy to use. Importing CAD files would be nice as well as saving the file in app but it works well and it’s free. Really glad I found it.
Best App Yet for making a cut list.

This app is superbly done. Data entry is easy and logical. For a detailed look at your cut list go all the way to EXPORT PDF there you can see all the data on screen and cut locations and you can print it if you like. The only thing better than the app is the developers response to help out. I had a few questions and they got right back to me and were happy to answer. If I knew how to write APP's this is the one I would write. Also no strong arming for free trials and whatnot. Rest assured if a pro version appears I will buy it without hesitation. But I can't imagine it getting much better than it is.
Saves time/money

I use this tool often, always when I’m building something. It helps me figure out how to get the most out of my material and how much material I will need which is a huge time saver. The monthly subscription price is extremely reasonable and in the winter when I’m not building, I don’t have to subscribe. I do wish there was a yearly subscription price though. Probably one of the most useful apps I have for woodworking currently.
• Pinch to zoom and pan the cutting layouts
• Landscape mode makes viewing layouts easier
• Long, narrow stock now displays at a readable size
• Add offcuts back into your stock to reuse them in the next calculation
• Cut mode now greys out pieces already cut away
• Name field is in the main list
• A fresh app icon
Plus refinements and fixes throughout. Thanks for using the app!
