FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: I bought Myst when it first came out in 1993. Can I get a free upgrade to this new version?
A: Thank you for your support over the years! We are not giving out free upgrades to previous purchasers of the original Myst. We put a lot of effort into making this new version of Myst and would appreciate your financial support again!
Q: Does this version of Myst support VR?
A: This version of Myst does not support VR, as the platform itself does not support it.
Q: I want to play Myst, but am concerned about my computer not meeting the minimum requirements. What should I do?
A: If your machine does not meet the minimum requirements and you still want to try Myst out, we recommend enabling one of our supersampling options through the graphics settings menu to see if it alleviates performance concerns. Depending on the storefront you purchase Myst from, you may be able to qualify for a refund through the store (not through Cyan support) if Myst does not run well on your platform. Please review each store platform refund policy for details.
Q: Will Myst support [insert language here] one day?
A: Possibly! We’d love to hear from you through our support team about any languages you’d like for us to support.
more I have an iMac M1 with only 8 GB of RAM. I've never played Myst before and thoroughly enjoyed it. I got it in early April 2025 after the Rime Age had been added. Although the game auto-selected Medium, I was still impressed with the detail of the environments, running smoothly on my 4480x2520 display. A couple minor bugs were cleared up in an update after I started. I only sought help once due to confusion over how to activate the Rime Age (and regretted having one less puzzle to solve!) Just note that finding it is still within the context of the game. Thanks Cyan!
Developer Response Thank you for your review. Glad to hear you enjoyed Myst!

I’ve played through Myst several times over the years from the original release, through various updates/remasters, including RealMyst to this one. This one is a mostly superb update/rebuilding in Unreal Engine, with countless nice new touches, at least visually. Replacing the original video bits of the actors with CGI puppets is a minor downgrade, but I get why it was necessary. Absolutely delighted that Rime has been re-added, and it is well worth the visit!

Soooo beyond excited at the new addition of the Rime age. I never got to play it myself as I only had the original Myst as a kid (but recently watched playthroughs of it online) and I have to say I think this is the best version of it Cyan has done. It’s really quite stunning and magical (and somewhat poignantly sad)

I got through the whole game to the end, and the clue of the 2 paper halves on how to find the last missing white page has a typo that leads to a bug. If you follow the instructions, the vault is not there in the marker. No matter what way you move all the markers (all on or all off), flip the dock switch off as in the old version, or rocket off as the randomized versions seems to say - IT DOESN’T WORK. So frustrating that this bug exists.

Due to Apple’s recent announcement of newer macOS software updates preventing the future support of many non-Apple Silicon Macs, and increased frequency of reports to our support address of instability on Intel and AMD Macs in the latest macOS versions despite our lack of impactful changes to our games during those times, we are updating our minimum and recommended requirements of Myst to remove official support for non-Apple Silicon Macs.
You may still be able to play Myst on certain Intel and AMD-based Macs at this time, but you may run into unexpected issues with game stability, performance, visual defects, and more, especially if you are playing on macOS Sequoia or above. Unfortunately, Cyan is unable to make meaningful changes to remedy these issues, as they appear rooted in changes in the operating system updates themselves and how they interact with our games over time.
As a studio that has been around for over 35 years, we've seen many operating systems and different hardware platforms go through similar growing pains. With some of our games being on digital stores for 15+ years, we pride ourselves in being able to maintain and continue offering our decades-old award-winning games to folks. However, there almost always comes a time in which software or hardware deprecation forces us to make tough decisions like this, and we can no longer provide the experience folks expect us to in those cases.

Hey all,
You’ve been asking, and we’ve been listening.
We’re happy to announce that this major content update and quality of life patch of Myst introduces the Age of Rime. This new Age offers additional content for players following the successful completion of the story of Myst. Once completing your game or loading a completed game, a new journey awaits you somewhere on Myst Island.
Some fans may know that Rime was previously a part of realMyst and realMyst: Masterpiece Edition. This reimagining of Rime will bring fresh discoveries to new and old players alike.
The Age of Rime introduces players to the snowy, mountainous seascape that Atrus and his family would visit in years past, before the events of Myst and Riven upended their lives. Sweeping vistas, beautiful ice structures, and fantastical natural phenomena await new visitors. This breathtaking new Age also houses a detailed laboratory space where bold experiments were made, delving into the mysterious nature of Linking Books themselves. This new version of Rime includes all-new narrative beats, new lore, and new sights to behold.
We hope to bring this patch to as many currently supported platforms for Myst as possible, so hang tight while we get that sorted.
Thanks, and enjoy.
Features
- Added the Age of Rime.
- Auto detect now supports auto-setting appropriate supersampling settings based on your scalability settings and platform type.

Auto detect will now use a specific set of rules based on the number of cores available on your Mac. This may also resolve issues on startup for folks on some Macs. Please make sure that your MacOS is on 15.3.2 or above to make sure this issue is resolved.
Minors
- Adjusted LODs on some meshes to prevent popping.
- Fixed deleting a screenshot from your notebook bouncing you back to the main menu instead of the Notebook submenu.

- Fixed a random crash that could occur when moving very quickly between two areas with different music playing.
- Various audio updates and improvements made to Myst Island and Stoneship.

Please note that there is a crash occurring with M4 devices on startup of Myst and other games in MacOS 15.1, resolved in MacOS 15.1.1. This issue was addressed in the MacOS update and there is no workaround available to fix this issue in Myst other than the user needing to update their MacOS version from MacOS 15.1 to a newer MacOS version. Thank you for understanding.
2.0.6 01/29/2025
- Fixed the bullfrog animation in Channelwood not properly hopping away
- Ray tracing enabled now forces foliage to be on Epic quality behind-the-scenes to workaround some performance issues related to anything less than 100% foliage density
- Other ray tracing performance improvements
- Minor hitch performance improvements
2.0.5 11/09/2024
Myst now comes with better platform stability, AND support for hardware-accelerated ray traced reflections, now available on Macs with the powerful M3 family of chips.
We’ve upgraded Myst from using Unreal Engine 4.27+ to Unreal Engine 5.3.2. Doing this has resolved a WIDE number of stability issues related to the game running on various platforms.
Engine Upgrade Features
- Visual changes/stability: The newer engine has resolved a lot of flickering texture issues we saw come up on lower-end hardware especially. There should also be some slight improvements in lighting, reflections, and more.
- HDR support changes: HDR has better support on all platforms now.
- RHI support changes: Metal 3 RHI support has been added. It is only enabled when on the M3 family of chips at this time. SM5 is the default RHI for all other Macs.
- OS Requirements: We are increasing our MacOS minimum requirement from MacOS 11.5 to MacOS 14.5.
UI Refresh
We’re happy to introduce a cleaner, more usable, and much nicer looking version of the menu for everyone in Myst. For those who have played our remake of Riven, you may find some similarities between the two. Here are some of the improvements our new menu in Myst brings compared to the old one:
- New cursor options have been added, and the default cursor has been switched to be the hand cursor. The default cursor size has also been modified to accommodate this change. This will override what folks currently have set in their cursor settings as we believe it is the best default experience for folks moving forward.
- The graphics settings menu is now much clearer on which settings need to be “Applied” and which ones will Apply automatically.
- Updated naming for “Gameplay Context Subtitles” to “Sound Context Subtitles” for clarity
- There’s a “Help” sub-menu now, and you can find the game’s version number there, in addition to “Teleport to Safe Spot” when you are in-game, should you need it.
- The controller/keyboard diagrams are now much clearer and scale better for a variety of screen sizes instead of being baked images. It will also properly detect the kind of controller you are using. Note that a couple of bindings may have changed – in particular the screenshot binding is now “x” instead of spacebar.

2.0.3 10/29/2024

1.7.0 01/04/2022
Hey all, Patch 6 is here for Myst on Mac! It is a smaller patch than previous ones but aims to address a couple of issues that have been discovered since launch.
Features
Russian & Polish localization added. Witamy na wyspie Myst… Добро пожаловать на остров Мист …!
New “Engage Sensitivity” slider added to controls settings menu. This decouples the regular cursor sensitivity option from how sensitive your cursor is in engage mode, and vice-versa.
Added a “Gamma” slider to the display settings menu.
Added a “Delete All” option to the photo album, for all of you who want an easy way to clean up the photo album.
‘P’ key now allows you to open the photo album directly. Same with the left face button on a gamepad.
Some performance improvements to AMD FidelityFX FSR on Mac.
Fixes
Added black plane to prevent folks from seeing the sky when looking up the elevator shaft in Mechanical.
Fix planetarium music sometimes cutting out when pressing the planetarium puzzle buttons too many times in quick succession.
Fix for some command-line overrides for windowed, fullscreen, etc. not applying when starting Myst with custom command-line overrides.
Controller support for Mac is a bit more robust now.
(SPOILER) Fix for crash occurring on some Macs with Intel GPUs when linking to D’ni.
(SPOILER) Fix for Sirrus’ and Achenar’s hair looking a bit swimmy on Mac during end-game sequences.
1.6.0 11/05/2021
Fixes:
- Renamed keys to WASD on French keyboard diagram
- Localization fix for objects not localizing correctly when “system language” is selected in the language options, or the OS language is set to something other than English. This fixes situations like Atrus’ note to Catherine sometimes not showing the correct translation.
- Fixed fish schools disappearing at fairly short distances in Stoneship
- Fix for the red page missing when going directly to the red page in Mechanical
- (SPOILER) Fix for white page turning invisible if loading a save game with a marker switch holding out the white page
There are still some issues we are hoping to fix within the next few weeks, some of the hot-button ones being:
- (SPOILER) Some Macs with Intel GPUs will crash when linking to D’ni.
Some more features we’re looking to add soon:
- Subtitle size changing ability.
- Localization for Russian & Polish languages. We have received localization from our localization partners for these and now we just have to implement them (aiming for this to be in Patch 6!).
- Subtitles for Classic Videos. This is going to take some time as this will require some time to write up the timing + words in the format Unreal Engine prefers, and put that text through another localization pass for every language we support.
1.5.3 10/05/2021
Hey all, Patch 4 is here for Myst! This one is less meaty than Patch 3 (if you haven’t seen it yet, we added CLASSIC VIDEOS mode in that patch!) but still contains some stability fixes we were able to make within the week. Please beware -- spoilers ahead!
New Features
- Generator room lights now turn on like the original Myst did when you enter the generator room. CA-CHUNK, CA-CHUNK, CA-CHUNK! (if you're an OG Myst fan, you could probably "hear" that)
- There are now bats that fly through the Selenitic tunnel when you turn the lights on for the first time. Spooky!
Fixes
- Fix for Channelwood spiral staircase tree having its bark look separated from the middle of the tree when on Low effects settings.
- Fix for in-game photos sometimes looking oddly cropped if you take an in-game screenshot while engaged with a puzzle or the library bookshelf.
- Fix for the Stoneship beacon light on the top of the lighthouse not being visible while the player is under the umbrella.
- Fix for the half page in Stoneship being completely black when held at particular angles (it should be a bit brighter now in those circumstances).
- Fix for the half-pages being torn on the same side regardless of which side (front or back) you’re looking at. We had a good laugh about that one.
- (SPOILER) Fix for the fireplace code reminder videos not playing when in Classic Videos mode.
There are still plenty of issues we are hoping to fix within the next few weeks, some of the hot-button ones being:
- (SPOILER) Some Macs with Intel GPUs will crash when linking to D’ni.
Some more features we’re looking to add soon:
- Subtitle size changing ability.
- Localization for Russian & Polish languages. We already have our localization partner looking into this.
- Subtitles for Classic Videos. This is going to take some time as this will require some time to write up the timing + words in the format Unreal Engine prefers, and put that text through another localization pass for every language we support.
Extra Notes/Support
Thank you to everyone who has reported issues with crashes on startup after enabling certain menu options, or even on the first attempt to start the game. In most cases, ensuring your Mac meets our minimum spec will resolve the issue.
If anyone encounters any crashes or other issues, please email support@cyan.com with the following information:
- “About this Mac” page of your machine,
- The contents of your /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Epic/Myst/Saved directory, and
- Details of the bug, with any repro steps if possible.
1.5.1 09/11/2021
New Features
- The feature you’ve all been waiting for… we’ve added a "Classic Videos" option to the display settings menu! Enabling it will allow you to watch some classic, upscaled versions of Myst videos where applicable, plus the original audio to go along with it. This setting is disabled by default but can be enabled (or disabled) at any time. A few things to note:
If you change this setting in the midst of a game session, you may have to reload your save, or leave + re-enter the area you’re in to see the nearby videos and audio change.
We do not yet have subtitles in for the classic audio, as this will require some time to write up the timing + words in the format Unreal Engine prefers, and put that text through another localization pass.
(SPOILER) This change does not apply to the characters in any of the end-game sequences, or the regular fly-by videos for each Age. There is also an issue where the "extra" video in classic mode won't play reminding the player of the fireplace puzzle page that we will fix in the next patch.
- If you wish to see tutorials for gameplay every time you encounter a puzzle instead of tutorials for interactions you have not yet learned, we’ve added a menu option for you! "Always Show Tutorials" is a new option in our display settings menu that will do just that for you.
- For all of you who don’t want to bask in the glory of our full 20s Cyan logo movie every time you start up Myst, we now have "skip" functionality implemented. After 5 seconds of dreaded waiting, you can skip through the logo scene with the enter key or with the bottom face button on your controller.
- Added framerate limit setting to graphics settings menu (unlimited by default).
- Added motion blur option to graphics settings menu (disabled by default).
- For folks who want the cursor to get out of the way more often for screenshots or whatnot: We’ve added an option into the display settings menu to allow the cursor to auto-hide if you are not moving around or hovering over an interactable.
- Engage mode cursor speed now respects the look/turn sensitivity players set in the menu.
General Fixes & Improvements
- (SPOILER) Fix for the white page disappearing from D'ni when the player opens + closes the menu it’s floating in the air.
- Fix for the channelwood spiral staircase door locking you out from middle level on a revisit of the Age if you pulled the lever more than once while it was opening the first time you visited that age
- Fix for some pickupable objects in Mechanical caches being invisible when you open the menu + close the menu while inside of the cache.
- Fix for the music volume not being set on startup after setting it to 0 in a previous game instance.
- General performance improvements for users with M1 Mac laptops.

- Fix for some interactable cursor offset issues after going up or down a ladder.
1.5.0 09/04/2021
- Players playing Myst with Ultra Wide monitors can now interact with parts of puzzles that were previously cut off.
- Stoneship lighthouse crank will now auto-crank about a third of the way just by clicking on it. This should alleviate some confusion about the crank being unable to charge the generator.
- Removed hover tooltip about ladders for "textures" in graphics settings menu. Turns out ladders and textures have almost nothing to do with each other... weird!!
- Fix for input placement on elevator rotation puzzle in Mechanical.
- Fix for imager room door occasionally trapping players when it opens as people leave. Someone needed to just come and grease that thing!
- (SPOILER) Fix for white page and other pages on Myst Island not appearing when you complete the game and start a new one within the same game instance. For all you folks trying to accomplish the "Speedy" achievement, this one is for you!
1.4.2 08/28/2021
Major
- Fixed being unable to view the Rime note or the Rime book on Myst Island under certain circumstances after leaving and returning to the Myst Library.
Minor
- Fixed a small hitch that could occur in Rime when approaching the hut.
- Using a mouse to click on any area of the new Welcome screen when prompting for any button to be pressed will now proceed, instead of requiring the player to use their mouse to click precisely on the prompting button itself.
- Fixed the outline displayed on save game slots not showing properly under certain circumstances.
