Our approach focuses on self-compassion rather than shame-based frameworks. We explore why labels like "alcoholic" can feel limiting for many people, and why we focus on curiosity and progress rather than an all-or-nothing mindset. Instead of asking "am I an alcoholic," we invite you to ask a different question: "Would I be happier drinking a bit less alcohol?" Then, through The Alcohol Experiment, you can find out for yourself — as hundreds of thousands of others already have.
We believe your relationship with alcohol is shaped by biology and habit, not a personal failing — and that self-compassion, not shame, makes lasting change easier (and yes, even enjoyable).
Important Note: If you experience severe withdrawal symptoms — such as delirium tremens or hallucinations — when cutting back on alcohol, you may have a physical dependence. While This Naked Mind can help with the emotional and psychological sides of your relationship with alcohol by shifting your perspective, it is not a substitute for medical care. This app surprised me in that it is easy to use and navigate. It took some time to figure it out, but for the most part I have done so without too much trouble. The only problem I have run into so far has been when someone posts a photo in the feed, then I am unable to read their written post underneath because when I click on it I only see the photo. But I am thrilled to pieces that I found this app, this beautiful resource to connect with like minds. I also discovered later that TAE was in here and that I could follow it day to day. It’s really miraculous that this exists, that it’s free,and that it is helping so many people world over. Thank you.

I came to TNM to change my relationship with alcohol, but what is miraculously happening is a change in my beliefs about myself. Experiencing subtle shifts in mindset is making life more joyful and giving me hope! While I used the app & read the books, the coaching is helping me get to the next level of reworking my brain.

I finally decided I might need some help. I registered and summited all my information. The app then says I have to answer questions before they will ”approve me” to use the app. Okay buzzard. The app then asks what the users primary goal is. I wrote that I wasn’t sure yet. Figured there would be more questions: there wasn’t. About 12 hours later I get a reply saying I was rejected. There was no feedback. Just rejected. Is this the right way to treat possible addicts. They finally reach out for help and you reject them?? Reaching out for help can be a very personal and difficult moment. And you tell them they can’t join your group? How do they think that makes the “applicant” feel. How does that reflect the mission for this organization? Seriously!
