Learning languages is actually pretty simple: if you consume content you enjoy, and you understand that content, you will make progress. Period.
Migaku (and its Chrome browser extension) enables you to do that:
1. Our courses take you from zero to 80% comprehension in ~6 months (10 cards/day)
2. We make text interactive: click words in your phone's YouTube subtitles to see what they mean
3. We let you make media-rich flashcards out of those words with one click
4. We make personalized study sessions out of the flashcards you create
5. Repeat!
Whether you're learning Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, Italian, German, Cantonese, Portuguese, English, French or Vietnamese, Migaku equips you with the tools you need to make real progress.
Migaku – AI Language Learning Tool
■ How languages are really learned:
Trying to learn a language by following a textbook is kind of like reading a textbook about biomechanics to learn how to ride a bike. If you want to watch movies in other languages, then you need to learn languages with movies. If you want to read books in other languages, then you need to learn languages by reading. As you spend more time doing the things you enjoy doing in the language you're learning, you'll build the unique skills you need to more easily do those things.
Unfortunately, it's difficult to read books and watch movies in another language as a beginner.
And that's where Migaku comes in
■ Data-driven courses for beginners
The problem with most apps and textbooks is that they teach you what someone else thinks language learners need to know, and those things may not reflect what you actually need to learn to do the things that are important to you. This matters because not all words are used equally often: while a college-educated native speaker knows ~30,000 words, you only need to know ~1,500 words to recognize 80% of the words in modern media.
Our flashcard-based courses teach you these ~1,500 words—the ones that are useful to everyone, no matter their goals—plus a few hundred basic grammar points. What makes our courses special is that every "next" flashcard contains only one new word, making Migaku's learning curve super smooth. You're always learning something new, but never overwhelmed. It's a fluent language learning approach.
Migaku courses are currently available for Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean.
■ Turn subtitles and text into interactive language learning opportunities
Migaku makes texts interactive: just click on words to see what they mean. You can also hear audio recordings from native speakers, reference images of the term, check example sentences, get an AI explanation of what the word means in context, have AI break sentences down for you word-by-word, or see a translation of the sentence that your word appears in.
Basically, Migaku lets you consume content in another language as if you knew as many words as a native speaker.
Our mobile app supports YouTube, manually pasted content, and physical content like books or street signs.
Our Chrome extension supports web pages and several popular streaming websites.
■ Create custom study cards or import language flashcards
Find a useful looking word while consuming content? Turn it into a high-quality flashcard with one button, and Migaku's spaced repetition language practice algorithm will create personalized study sessions for you. You'll be nudged to review these flashcards periodically, ensuring you remember them.
Decks designed for the Anki flashcard app can be converted for use with Migaku, too.
■ Study anywhere, even offline
Migaku's courses and any flashcards you make are available offline and automatically sync between all of your devices.
■ Learn multiple languages at once
A single Migaku subscription gives you access to all of Migaku's languages and lets you use all of Migaku's features and AI language learning tools as much as you want.

Immerse → enjoy → improve
The app has been working good for me so far. There are some issues. Sometimes when I briefly go to another app and come back, the flash card will not have any sound, and neither will any of the rest of the cards. I have to close the app and open it again. Also, will there ever be an offline mode? This is specific but when I take the train to school I go through a tunnel for about 15 minutes and have no service. On the Anki app that was no problem and it would still work. Is there anyway that can be brought to Migaku? If not, honestly I understand. The convenience that Migaku brings is more than enough the rest of the time. It’s been so helpful in my Japanese journey.
Japanese Migaku is amazing

I’ve been using Migaku for studying Japanese and honestly it’s helped me way more than I expected. I really like how it lets you learn directly from real content like videos and shows, instead of just textbooks. The Japanese section makes it easy to look up words, see example sentences, and turn things you don’t know into flashcards right away.At first it felt a little confusing to set up, and I still mess up the settings sometimes, but once I got used to it, it became part of my daily study. I especially like how it shows pitch accent and lets you hear native pronunciation, which is something I was missing before. It’s not perfect and sometimes I feel like I’m not using all the features correctly, but overall Migaku makes Japanese study feel more natural and less boring. I’m still a beginner, but I can tell it’s helping me understand Japanese better little by little.
Best language app I’ve tried!
MargaretR0
As someone who’s tried to study Japanese on and off (emphasis on the “off” lol) for 15 years, I’m so glad Migaku exists and that I decided to take a chance on it. It’s the best language app I’ve tried yet, and not only are the lessons good (it’s got some of the best grammar explanations I’ve seen so far, while still being simple), but it also makes it easy to sentence-mine through the Chrome extension. Anki was always too overwhelming for me, but Migaku is really easy to understand, and I don’t dread opening the app every day. I recommend starting with the trial to see how you like it before you purchase, since we’re all different when it comes to learning. Migaku isn’t perfect (no language app is), but it’s helping me so much. If I’m gonna be watching J-dramas anyway, might as well learn and make some flash cards from them while I’m at it!
Best All-In-One Language Learning Tool

I have never written an app review before. I felt compelled to write this because of how much value this app and the entire Migaku ecosystem has provided to me in my Japanese learning journey.I’ve been learning Japanese on and off for about 5-6 years. I started with LingoDeer, watching tons of YouTubers like MattVsJapan on the best learning methods, and of course using Anki decks to learn words. I’ve learned a lot of Japanese over the last few years before using Migaku, but Migaku has been the most straightforward, rewarding, and seamless tool to use in my journey.Having a tool that lets me know exactly how many words I know, my comprehension level on whatever material I’m viewing/reading, gives me details on any word or sentence I come across, and that lets me easily create flash cards with automatic audio recording, screenshots, word/sentence definitions! I won’t even explain all the software and tools you’d have to install on your computer that lets you get even half of the features Migaku offers. So to have it all in one place WITH a mobile app is unprecedented with language-learning software as far as I’m aware.I’m honestly surprised that there aren’t a ton more people using this software in their language learning journey.
- Migaku is now available in Spanish — ¡bienvenidos!
- Improved ability to diagnose any failures in the YouTube feature
- Fixed an issue where the Settings screen background would bleed through on the edges on iOS 26
