My only criticism, like that of other reviewers, is of BBVA’s SMS-based OTPs. Security experts have long established they are not secure. Please replace SMS OTPs with users’ choice of app-based TOTPs, Fido keys, and possibly in-app confirmation if you can figure out how to implement that without exposing users to “fatigue” attacks that affected the Microsoft Authenticator app. See Google and Github for good examples of managing user authentication.Other than that, my experience has been great. The staff at my branch on Ave Diagonal here in Barcelona has been great. Most of them speak English and are patient with my broken Spanish. (I’m trying not to be one of those entitled Americans who assumes the whole world ought to speak my language but not the other way around.) The app has an English mode. While I’m perfectly happy to lose a few euros over a misunderstanding at the grocery store, I have a much lower tolerance for risk when it comes to interactions with my bank, so that’s very reassuring.Also, I love how easy it is to pay for things. Apple Wallet integration is excellent. Setting up automatic payments for rent to a private individual is also way easier than in the US, which is effectively still stuck with paper checks.So far, it’s been one of my best banking experiences.

If you are not living in Spain and have no “validated” phone which means a phone totally controlled by BBVA ( forget your privacy ). They will ask to install a BBVA keyboard which will give them total control of the phone, all your passwords, everything you type it will belong to them. So , if don’t have validated phone and number in Spain by office located in Spain you will not longer have access to your account. They gave me access for short time without validated phone ,but when I started to claim the return of money charged illegally by (Clasula Suelo) They restricted again the access.This bank is a mirror of the authoritarian regime in Spain. The customer service is horrible. I have been calling, explaining, Nada! Olvídalo. Stay away from BBVA and App too. Don’t even update the app because you will loose features.

This is the worst banking app I’ve ever used, and the worst bank I’ve ever banked with. I’ve lived in 8 countries in the Americas, Europe and Africa, so I have a lot of banking experiences to compare with BBVA. They spam customers with emails about products (lines of credit, mortgages, etc.) but when ALL their ATMs and digital services are down, which has happened twice this year, they are silent. The app is not user friendly and the interface is clunky and old-fashioned. Finally, and this is the worst part, the bank staff are super rude with massive bad attitudes. And they only serve customers in person from 8-11am! Only 3 hours! Their client service is just atrocious. I once was traveling outside of the EU and they blocked my card to “prevent fraud” in the middle of my trip—even tho I had warned them I was traveling (and had already been traveling for some weeks!) I called and verified my information, but because I couldn’t receive an SMS on my Spanish number since I was out of the EU, my card remained blocked for the remainder of my vacation, which was a huge inconvenience. BBVA erroneously believes that measures like this prevent fraud, when in reality they just make for a terrible user experience.
