Sesli Sözlük is a dictionary. We started it in 1999, and it has been used by Turkish speakers learning English, and by people learning Turkish, ever since.
Type a word and you get its meanings, synonyms, where it comes from, and example sentences. For most words you can tap to hear the pronunciation in American, British or Australian English, or in Turkish. Many entries also have pictures and short video clips of the word being spoken in real conversation. Hearing a word said naturally a few times does more for your memory than reading a definition ten times.
English and Turkish are the main pair, but there are 18 languages in total: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Greek, Polish, Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Kurdish as well. In Settings you pick the two you use most, and you can change them whenever you like.
The English–Turkish dictionary also works with no internet connection, so it keeps working on a plane or abroad without a data plan.
Some smaller things we think you will like:
- You can look up a word from any other app. Select the text, tap Share, then "Look Up in Sesli Sözlük".
- Words you have looked up show in Spotlight search.
- Your history and favorites sync between your iPhone and iPad through iCloud.
- There is a dark appearance, and you can make the text bigger.
- The app itself is available in 22 interface languages.
The app is free and shows ads. If you would rather not see them, there is a single one-time purchase that removes them for good. It is not a subscription, and you can try a week without ads for free before deciding.
You do not need an account. If you create one on seslisozluk.net and sign in, your history and favorites are kept there too.
I have been using Sesli Sozluk since I first went to Turkey four years ago and I won’t use another dictionary! I love how it saves what you have looked up and how it gives such great definitions; I have even looked up English words in it so it serves as two dictionaries! The best feature is how it has many words offline so you don’t need data for a lot of it.

This is a very handy little app to carry around. It's occasionally baffled, Turkish being what it is, but in general I am very impressed not only with the breadth of the entries, but with the extensive translation alternatives to capture different shades of meaning. Pretty good on Turkish idioms, too. A Turkish friend recommended it to me, and he uses it all the time, even to teach in English (in which he is quite fluent).
