Shifty
staff scheduling
$19.99
Shifty is a scheduling app for small businesses and individuals.
:: ABOUT ::
The basis of Shifty is to enter all the data which rarely ever changes, such as shift patterns, staff and duties. After that's in the system making schedules is just dragging and dropping combinations of those items.
Shifty was originally designed to be used by restaurants, pubs and shops. However it turned out to be useful to a much wider audience. For example: families, security companies, tour guides, charities, schools, churches, doctors and even gardeners!

more I'm the head chef of a small coastal bar&grill. I don't have the time to spend to much time in general. This app was incredibly user friendly, and after initial setup has freed up a significant amount of time and frustration with the email function. Now my kitchen staff has no excuse on shift times and dates, with all of them owning smartphone's. The schedule is on their person at all times. We all know how the world would come to a catastrophic hell fire end if they didn't have their phone within reach😄

I have been using shifty for a few years now. The app is great. If your looking to avoid monthly fees to schedule staff, this is it. You can email staff there own schedule to keep. Backup multiple schedules to keep for different locations if need be. Insert hourly wages. Avoid the incident of double booking staff. Create groups for each department. So on & so on. Hands down a must have for every scheduler wanting to avoid a monthly fee. =)

When an app cost $20 you expect more. This one almost gets a good grade...I own a small business and making schedules is always a chore. This app helps much but does need improvements. It would be great if the app could integrate the employee schedule into the the calendars that I have on my iPad. This would allow me to share the calendars with the employees and they would even be able to see their schedule on their own devices including their iwatch. This would eliminate the need to email schedules. The calendars would just sync and update on their devices. When it comes to emailing or sharing schedules: it would be nice to be able to convert the schedule to pdf and that way I can email or text it or print it all in the same format. When you print a monthly schedule it would be nice to be able to choose the range of weeks you want to print and to see a preview. It prints what ever range that is pre determined by the app and their is no print preview. It would be helpful for the monthly schedule to show the weekly total for each employee. That way they can easily and quickly see how many hours they work per week. And it would be visually helpful for the calendar to change colors on each row it prints or to put a darker square around each day. This would eliminate the confusion that all my employees complained about 'that it looks like the day of the month belongs to the day below it' (that one is hard to explain unless you look and the monthly schedule print out. The monthly schedule right now show a monthly total for hour. What good is that, since you can't predetermine what weeks you want on the monthly schedule, that total on the bottom right doesn't necessarily reflect the hours that will be paid out in that pay period. There are many good things with this app and if the authors decides to improve the app in the future I will change my rating. I tried asking the author about these things in an email three weeks ago but I got no response.

iOS14 Compatibility
This by itself has taken an enormous amount of work as much of the app has had to be replaced for iOS14! IMPORTANT: As a result of these massive changes you will need to export your database *before* installing either iOS14 or this app version. If you do not back up your database you will have to setup Shifty again. This is a big disruption but setup can usually be done very quickly in 10 mins.
Larger iPad Models
Also in this version, larger iPad models (e.g. 10.5", 11", 12.9") are now supported.
News Checker
Shifty can now alert you if there is a new version available or if there is any other important information that you need to know. It has been added in response to the iOS14 update disruption. It's a safety feature that you might never see.
Dark Mode Theme
The easiest change to see is the new dark theme. It has taken a colossal amount of design experimentation, so I hope you like it. Note: The beauty of the original classic theme is still available in the theme options. Enjoy!
Finally the big announcement: Shifty is celebrating its 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
It's amazing that businesses and families that have been using Shifty for so many years, and some have been from the very beginning back when the first iPad was released all the way to present day. To think that people on their own life journeys have taken a scheduling app with a characterful orange mascot with them for over a decade!
Three cheers to everyone!!!
I wish success and health for your businesses and families, especially in these difficult times.
Many Kind Regards,
The Shifty Team (i.e. Owen)

Wage Adjustments
This allows wage adjustments based on duties. They can be used to calculate: salaried staff, tiered rates, bonuses, wage multipliers and more. For example, Mike normally gets paid $20 but when standing in for 'Manager' gets paid $25 (i.e. standard wage is replaced). Or Tom, he gets a $42 fixed bonus for being 'On Call' regardless of the length of shift (i.e. bonus applied per shift not per hour). Or Kate, she gets paid 1.5× when working the 'Overtime' duty (i.e. hourly wage multiplied). These new options should reduce the likelihood to reach for a calculator when you need to know cost.
Languages Added
Good news if English isn't your preferred language, or you need to share schedules with native speakers.

Milestone
It's here! Shifty launched over 3 years ago and has now has finally hit the big 2.0!
Inline Duties Mode
This mode allows you to assign duties by tapping. It's particular useful for users who do not use 'duties' but want to color code staff to make the schedule easier to read. To setup color coding, simply add blank duties " " for the colors you need. Then turn on the inline duties mode in the options.
Increased Capabilities
More staff, shifts and groups mean it is now possible to store a maximum of 740 staff and duties combined (the previous maximum was 200). This is a huge increase! Most of of you won't need the new maximum but the increased group sizes will benefit you. You'll be able to fit more information on screen and could reduce the number of groups you use.
Extended Repeats
Previously you could easily create repeat patterns for the current 6 week period. Now you can do the same but for a 17 week period! This is particularly useful for users who have schedules that repeat up to 8 weeks into the future. And for everyone, it makes it easy to check repeat patterns for the past and future.

• Printing

• Duties Increased
• Retina Improvements
• Bug Fixes
Printing
This is a colossal feature. You can now print a visual schedule like how it appears on screen, but with many refinements to make the schedule clearer on paper and minimises the amount of ink needed. You can also print a tabular schedule, this is a traditional style of schedule where staff can quickly see what they're doing, where as the visual schedule is better for seeing overall coverage. There are further optimisations for day/week/month time ranges, so there is actually 6 polished print layouts in total!
Cost Totals
Each staff can now have an hourly wage. Cost totals are displayed for all the time ranges (day/week/month/6 weeks) as well as for individual staff members. Useful for keeping schedules within budget.
Email Groups
It used to be the case you could email a single group or all groups - now you can email multiple groups too. For example 'email every groups apart from the availability group'.
Email Summary
The email summary is a smarter version of the previous usage report. It shows staff at glance what days they are working and acts as an index for the whole schedule, making it quicker for staff to find their entries and reduces the risk of staff missing when they're meant to be working.
Duties Increased
More coloring options. For example, some managers use an 'Unassigned' duty for staff scheduled to be in but don't yet have a specific duty. The new shades of grey are great for these special types of duties.
Retina Improvements
No pixel has been left unturned. Shifty is looking marvellous on the iPad retina.

Month Initials
You can now display staff initials in month view instead of the shift counts. Handy if you only schedule a few staff per shift because it makes it easier to see at glance who's working over a 6 week period.
Shift Deductible Hours
In edit shifts you can add a break to each shift. This can be used to make the hour counts display the total billable hours instead of the total assigned hours.

Trumpet Blowing
I'm sure you've noticed that Shifty has a very unique approach to scheduling, it's not simply a hodgepodge of features copied from other apps - rather it's a meticulously well thought out piece of software that has introduced new ways of doing things. An example of this innovation can be seen in the new and shiny repeats feature. Repeating is not a new idea but Shifty's solution is. It provides a fast and flexible way to create complex repeat patterns. For example, if you wanted to repeat Monday to Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday for the next 4 weeks you would have to go through a normal repeat workflow 3 times, with Shifty this can be done with one step!
Shifty also shows you existing repeated data at a glance. This is really handy for checking your repeat patterns are exactly how you want them. For example, the repeats calendar visually shows you that the current day is repeated every other day for the whole month, opposed to checking every day manually (like other apps).
There's more! Deleting or moving entries from one day to another (aka 'cut and paste') can also be done with Shifty's repeat feature, making it more flexible and integrated than having separate options for each command (like other apps).
The icing (on what is already is a very tasty cake) is that Shifty's repeat feature uses stroking. Which is a fancy feature I introduced in the last version. Stroking with the repeats feature is a perfect match. For example, to repeat a day for the next 5 weeks just requires one downward stroke, instead of numerous taps/clicks (yes you guessed it - like other apps!).
Maybe I'll get a design award for Shifty's repeats feature :)
Repeats Feature
In day or week view, if a there are entries you'll see the repeats icon in the bottom right. Tap to open, then stroke the days/weeks you want the to repeat to. Tap somewhere else on screen to close the repeats modal and your changes will be committed! In the options menu you can change the repeats behaviour to always repeat all groups or just the current group. You can also turn off 'Repeats Protection' which prevents you from replacing existing data. In the repeats modal, greyed out days/weeks can't be repeated to. Either because the target day doesn't have all the shift patterns needed or it has other data that is being protected.
Staff Names / Initials
In the options there's now a choice of what to display in week view: staff names, staff initials or duty counts. Work out which option is best for you. For example, choosing staff names for a schedule which has up to 15 staff per shift won't work, as there isn't enough screen space to display all the information.
Total For Single Group Schedules
There's now a total count in the bottom right corner for single group schedules. Multiple group schedules are unaffected as they already have total counts displayed in the group navigation.
"Today" Option
Open the month nav by tapping the date in the top left corner. There you'll see the today option, tap it to jump to today's date!

Dedication
The version is dedicated to the many Australian Shifty users. Thanks guys! I'd like to hear more from you, write some reviews and email me your suggestions :)
Email Options
There's now a bunch of options to tailor the generated email. The email sent used to be for the whole month, now it can be for day or a week too. You can change who receives the email, either all staff or just the staff that have been scheduled. In some cases it's better if a staff member receives an email regardless so that they know for sure that they are not scheduled to work. In other cases, particularly if managing a lot of staff who only work occasionally, not sending them an email if they aren't scheduled is better. There's also a new email structure option; 'By Staff' is quicker for staff to see when they are working and 'By Shift' is easier for staff to see who's on the same shift and who is supposed to be relieving them. And lastly, there's an option to include a usage summary, this shows the total number of shifts and hours that staff have been scheduled to work.
Duty Color Picker
Shifty will automatically pick a unique color for each duty, but sometimes you'll want to choose your own, especially if you're moving from an existing color code system, now you can.
Stroking
Is name I've given to 'single finger dragging over regions that open modals or are on/off switches, to activate them'. It's a new efficiency system to reduce the number of taps needed to accomplish some tasks. For example when adding a new shift pattern, assigning that shift to the days of the week requires lots of taps, now you can just drag your finger over the days you want. It's been implemented in a few places, another example is checking what days each staff member is working this month, instead of tapping the count next to their name and then tapping the next one and the next one - just stroke over the counts. I have big plans for stroking, it's the foundation for the soon to be repeats feature - maybe I'll get design award for this :)

The version of Shifty is dedicated to Bdennis11 who is the author of Shifty's first AppStore review. Not only that, Bdennis11 was a pioneer in pointing out Shifty does not have to be used for just staff scheduling, it's versatile enough to be used for lots of different things. In thanks to Bdennis11 I've added a feature to rename parts of the interface, so for those who don't use 'staff' can rename the interface to: 'products', 'plants', 'items', 'clients', etc. Thanks Bdennis11!
Hour Counts
You can turn on hour counts in the new options menu. Hour counts replace many of the shift counts in Shifty.
Of course hour counts and shift are both useful numbers, for those who use both there's a short cut for switching between them, instead of going back into the options menu you can just do a 4 finger tap to switch.

You can now change what day the week starts on.
Time Preference
In the iPad settings you can turn on 24hr time, Shifty will detect what you've chosen and display accordingly.
New Time Picker
You now have a fancy new time picker. It's much faster to use the old time spinners.

Month Navigation
Tap on the month in the top left corner, this opens the month navigation. Month navigation shows 8 months into the past and 8 months into the future. If you want to look back several months it's quicker than using previous and next buttons. It also shows the number of entries for each month. If you're using groups then there's second count which shows the total number of entries that are in other groups.
Staff Member's Calendar
In the staff list, tap on the count next to a staff member, this opens the days working calendar. It's used for quickly seeing which days that staff member is working that month.

Dedication
This version of Shifty is dedicated to Nadeem for being the number 1 bug spotter.
Groups Feature
The new groups feature is very powerful (and was a lot of work!) as it allows for multiple schedules. Each group can have its own shift patterns, staff and duties, which massively increases the previous limitations; e.g. say you have 10 groups each with 15 staff, that's a 150 staff! But groups aren't just for raising limitations - by another name they could be called: 'departments', 'locations', 'teams', 'zones', etc… They are very useful for organising complicated schedules, which is the majority of schedules!
