The 4th generation Hearts of Space mobile app offers iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch users free, anytime access to our new shows up to 4 times each week. Shows change and the free play allotment resets on Fridays around midnight Pacific Time.
New in-app SETTINGS allow you to customize your experience. You can browse and SEARCH the entire Hearts of Space collection of programs and albums within the app and make and edit personal PLAYLISTS and FAVORITES (now a 3-star rating that also allows you to block any program you don’t want to hear). Apps offer glitchless audio “backgrounding,” Bluetooth and AirPlay support, and up to 256 kBps streaming in the high-quality AAC format.

Beginning as a pioneering late night radio show in the San Francisco Bay area in 1973, the program continues to offer "slow music for fast times." Hearts of Space evolved its own unique format — a calm, space-creating mix of ambient, electronic, world, new age, classical, contemplative, and experimental music from many eras and cultures. The breadth and depth of this musical focus is the secret of our longevity. A weekly one-hour show was nationally syndicated on the NPR network starting in 1983 and has been heard by millions of radio listeners ever since.
In 2001, we were one of the first independent music producers to offer an online streaming service. While we continue to serve our radio network, our main focus today is our web site and mobile apps.

Like many here, I have been an HOS listener since the 80s. The previous version of the iOS app was never great but it was getting increasingly decrepit. If left in the background, even if not playing anything, it would chew up the battery in a few hours. Also, not being able to manage playlists from the iOS app was a big hole in functionality.So far, I am very pleased with this newest incarnation. It’s nice to be able to add a show to my playlist without having to go to the HOS web site, skipping ahead or back in a show works fairly well, and I like the Voice Over and Sleep Timer controls right they at the bottom of the program player. The organization of the “Music” page is a lot easier to work with. Plus just sitting and waiting in the background when I’m not playing anything, the app barely touches the battery. Now I won’t find myself with a dead phone before noon because I forgot to kill the HOS app in the background when I got up in the morning.

Great Music - Future Apple Watch Compatibility?

I love listening to hearts of space- I used to listen to the radio broadcast in my former city, but hadn’t been able to find a local station after moving. I’m subscribed to the standard plan and I like how many options it gives me each week to listen to new (to me) broadcasts. I don’t know if there’s potential for an Apple Watch version of the app, but I would love to be able to play HoS music through it (even if limited to the weekly broadcasts or specific playlists). I leave my phone at home a lot to cut down on screentime, but HoS is one app I miss when I do.

I purchased this app along with a number of other ambient music apps, and originally I didn’t get much out of this one because the way it works is quite unique. I called for assistance when I needed to get it running properly on my Sonos and home systems. I got an immediate callback, followed by the best instruction I’ve ever received from any app support, from someone who clearly loved their job. Now that I understand this app’s channels and programs, it is running full time. The music is gorgeous.

When I was in college back in the early 2000’s I remember catching some kind of show they referred to as “space music.” I didn’t know the name of the show, only that it aired on Sundays at 11pm on my NPR station. Years later I stumbled onto the name Hearts of Space in my dorm room in college. From “Celtic Legacy” to “Thursday Afternoon,” I was a fan from those late night study sessions listening to HOS in the background. Thanks to the app, I can relive all those great moments! And the prices for the monthly memberships are fantastic! LOVE THE APP!
