BBEdit is the leading professional text, code, and markup editor for the Macintosh.
As the "go to" tool for web site designers, web application developers, writers, and software developers, this award-winning product provides an abundance of high-performance features for editing, searching, and manipulation of text, code, and HTML/XML markup.
As a replacement for TextWrangler, BBEdit is built by the same developers, using the same award-winning technology, and is identical to TextWrangler in every way you're used to. Unlike TextWrangler, BBEdit is Apple Silicon native, and compatible with contemporary macOS versions.
An intelligent interface provides easy access to BBEdit’s best-of-class features, including: grep pattern matching; search and replace across multiple files; project definition tools; function navigation and syntax coloring for numerous source code languages; code folding; FTP and SFTP open and save; AppleScript, Automator, and Shortcuts support; Unix scripting support; text and code completion; a complete set of robust HTML tools; and more.
BBEdit offers a 30-day evaluation period (beginning the first time you use it on your computer), during which its full feature set is available.
During the evaluation period, BBEdit is fully functional. After the evaluation period has expired, you can continue to use BBEdit for free, forever, with no nag screens or unsolicited interruptions.
In “free mode”, BBEdit provides a modified set of features, which incorporates a powerful set of core features. Using BBEdit in free mode costs you nothing, while providing an upgrade path to advanced features and capabilities.
To enable BBEdit’s advanced features after the evaluation period is over, you will need to have an active BBEdit subscription. Subscriptions are available on either a monthly or annual basis.
An active subscription gives you access to all of BBEdit’s advanced features, including any new features that we introduce during updates or major upgrades, for as long as the subscription is in good standing.
Please see our comparison chart for a detailed listing of which advanced features are available with a subscription.
Subscription terms and conditions:
We do not collect any data from your use of BBEdit, whether or not a subscription is in effect.

Great except subscription

I realize that every software program believes they have the right to create a subscription service cause everyone else does, but it causes turmoil in the industry. Every time a great app, like BBEdit, indicates it now requires Monthly/Annual subscription the consumer must weigh whether it is worth the cost personally. I wished they offered a personal one time fee to acquire the app (specific version) permanently. Otherwise we will find other free alternatives just to stay clear of the subscription.
Lost touch with reality decades ago

BBEdit was incredible back in the days when WebSTAR and Dreamweaver were still a thing and for many, many years I could not imagine living without it. These days, it's a far cry from adequacy as a web development tool. From its anemic syntax highlighting options to its flat out lack of support for any language newer than Markdown, this application is a dinosaur that appeals primarily to nostalgic sorts who don't actually build websites for a living. I mean, if you look at BareBones' site for BBEdit right now you'll find most of the links 404, even the one that says it'll tell you "What's new in 12." They're probably the only people in the world still cowboy coding right on an SFTP server anymore and it shows. The sole reason I continue to keep it on my hard drive is the "Zap Gremlins" feature. It's wonderful and no modern editor has anything quite as simple or effective. Thank goodness I can have that for free.
Great editor with real support

Reading many reviews on the App store I'm disappointed to find some many fellow Mac users so poorly informed before posting a review. These points have been made a million times but let's rehash as people STILL don't get it.1. For those complaining about TextWrangler going away, BBedit IS TextWrangler if you don't subscribe and use in free mode.2. For those complaining about a subscription. You can buy a license directly from Barebones. It's just not an App store option. For the record, if you want to keep BBedit up to date and were in the habit of buying and paying the upgrade price, the subscription is not substantially different. Granted, with the perpetual license, you have an option to skip a version or two, so if that's appealing, go that route.People are whining about Barebones being greedy. I don't expect anyone at the company is living in million dollar houses with cars that cost 6 figures. It's very hard to keep a software company running for any length of time, much less one that focuses on what is essentially and product for a much more limited audience. $3.99/month for a tool used for professional work is incredibly cheap. If you need a full IDE, subscribe to something like IntelliJ. It's about $500/year. Which for a professional developer, is still reasonable. The latest version of BBedit has definitely made it a 5 star app. It now supports LSP. If you do web development, you have real Emmet support. And, although not just a newest feature, the grep playground is amazing. But, the most important thing is this is a fast, reliable editor. Editors like VSCode have become very popular but they are painfully slow and completely useless if you need to open very large files. I also do a lot of work in Vim, which is the fastest editor I've every used but when I'm working on my Mac, BBedit is a great way to go.
best support I have ever encountered

The basic (free) version of BBedit does everything I need in an editor although I am not a regular user. When I tried to use the program after an update to version 14 the it crashed on startup. I sent a support email and within probably less than 15 minutes had a response. A few minutes after I responded to a request for some crash reports I received another email with a link that fixed the problem. It is a shame that not all support is so responsive.
BBEdit 15.5.5 is a free and recommended update for all customers, and includes changes to work around a bug in macOS 26 which caused the application to appear to be stalling intermittently, as well as fixes for reported symptoms. Complete details are available in the application change notes via the Help menu.
BBEdit 15.5 introduced support for the "Writing Tools" feature in macOS Sequoia; a new "Workspaces" feature for easily switching between working environments; changes to improve the experience when executing long-running Unix scripts; support for FTP transport-layer security (FTPS); and numerous internal performance improvements. There are many other additions and refinements.
