Need to transpose a song for a singer? Done. Want to practice with a full rhythm section behind you? Hit play.

This app is awesome for any player of any level

Having the ability to play with other people is an essential skill for a musician and this gives you all the practice you need. It doesn't matter what instrument you play or sing you can play along with this, mute instruments you don't want and put any of the songs in different styles to really stretch your ability and imagination. You can change keys each time around to really level up your ability. I have every one of my piano students on this app too and I've seen their ability and enjoyment of playing increase rapidly. Forget metronomes! Pick any song and style, mute everything but the drums and suddently scales are fun! Can't say enough good things. Just do it!

Bad learning workflow
Supergenre
This app works fine as a backing track tool once you've already learned the chords and basics of a song, but it's absolutely awful for getting to that point. There's no way to hear individual chords without starting full playback. Stopping resets your position and clears your selected start point (forcing constant re-selection, even if you’re in loop mode). And the real head scratcher: you can't see the actual notes being played by default, or even hear the chord options when you cycle through. These features are such low-hanging fruit and wouldn’t detract from the app’s core workflow / target user in any way. What's most frustrating is that forum posts show users have been requesting these basic learning features for over a decade, but they've been completely ignored. Simple additions like chord preview on-click, persistent selection, note visualization, and better hotkeys would transform this into an actual learning tool, but the developers clearly don't prioritize that use case. If you want to learn new songs from scratch, this isn't worth the money - it's only valuable if you're already proficient and just need accompaniment.
Great App except for lack of documentation

Well done. Super tool and super flexible. The single largest issue is when you admirably succeeded in maximizing how many chords can fit on a page, it overcame your otherwise wonderful intuitive user interface. Also I am a beta tester on the iOS version. There is need for some expanation about the relationship between where chord symbols are placed in a measure and when they sound. It appears there are many places where a symbol can be placed which will sound the same number of beats as spaces are ignored except when creating ambiguity. A bit of documentation would be helpful.
Game Changer

I am an intermediate guitar player, learning jazz. This app, after even one week of regular use, has accelerated my ability to learn jazz by orders of magnitude. This is what I have been looking for forever. After a few more years of regular use, I am confident I will become the expressive melodic musician I have always knew I was able to become, I can already feel it starting to build. I am forever grateful to iReal Pro, for the continued gift of learning music. You got a lifelong champion in me. Bravo.
