European War is quite a surprise. It plays like Risk but with more detail and strategy. The basic movements are the same: group units in stacks and attack adjoining provinces with dice rolls resolving combat. But this game adds action cards that can be purchased each turn (assuming you have enough money). The cards allow you to recruit new units; assign generals to select stacks to give them attack or defense bonuses; bombard enemy stacks with cannon; create fortresses (which give stacks a big defense bonus but locks them in place for a few turns); or move stacks by ship. Each nation also has a special card that provides a unique benefit but is very expensive and can be played only a few times each game. Reinforcements are recruited at the various capital cities, so controlling them is key. Every province provides some money, though, so there's an incentive to control even out-of-the-way parts of the map too. Overall, the game is simple to play but has a enough depth to provide a strategic challenge. The AI is competent and provides a reasonable challenge. It will capture vulnerable provinces to keep its cash flow going. And it seems to use the cards effectively. And it will try back-door attacks. I've only played on the easiest setting so far, but it's kept me entertained. The game offers a campaign and several scenarios (really mini-campaigns loosely based on various Napoleonic battles.) Graphics are simple but attractive. My only criticism is that some of the fonts are a bit fuzzy on my 13" MacBook Air, I assume because the game is a port from the iPad. (I would have given it 5 stars otherwise.) I downloaded this game on a whim and ended up playing for two hours. I'm sure I'll play it again. It's certainly not an epic game, but it's plenty of fun. Easily worth the $3 I paid for it.

I am astonished by the other reviews I have read, as my experience with the game is entirely different. The game is played by purchasing and playing "cards" which allow you to perform actions such as deploying or equiping units, or bombarding your enemy. Units move around the board and attack each other, capturing territory, and gaining or losing tax revenue. Very much your standard strategy fare.Or at least that is the way the game is supposed to work. After 15 minutes of trying to play, I've figured out how to purchase and play cards, but I cannot figure out how to select and move units. It must be possible, based on the actions of my computer opponents, but I've tried every combination of clicking, arrow keys, and modifiers that I can think of. I can drag the board around, but the game just beeps at me when I try to click on units. I'm willing to assume that I'm stupid and that this is meant to be simple, but I expect that every game will have decent instructions to aid the idiots like me. The instructions given are exceptionally poor. There is no mention of how to perform simple actions such as selecting and moving units. The grammar is poor. Many sentences do not even make sense. E.g. The complete description of a Fortress card reads, "All points rolled by dice +1 in the round of defence. Can not [sic] act in 3 turns." I have determined that the author meant "die" (singular), not "dice" (plural), but I cannot discover what the author intended to be significant about 3 turns. I can only assume that the author is writing in a non-native languange and did not bother to have the text proofread. Beyond playability, I've already encountered several bugs. When switching in and out of fullscreen it is possible to cause the graphics rendering to go haywire, overlaying a continuously changing set of irrelevant images, and in the span of 15 minutes, I've triggered 2 full application crashes complete with error reporting.I can't remember if I paid anything for this app or if it was free. In either case, I paid too much. I want the wasted fifteen minutes of my life back. This app should never have passed QA testing.

Only buy this if you want to be stab a screw driver through your computer. I dont know how many times i would attack a with more than 2 times as many guys as my opponent and i wouldn't even kill half of their forces. What ever they have rolling dice is very loaded and favors the computer very heavily. Do not buy this, it is a waste of you money.

Does not work. Open app and most of screen is black. The top of the screen shows the very bottom of the startup page. Have to force quit the application.
