Huge time-saver!

I had heard about this app a few months ago. I finally got around to purchasing it and I’m really, really happy I have. It’s a massive time-saver and saves me the annoyance of having to take screenshots and then going through the work of finding them and placing them where I need to which (in the past) involved having a finder window open and then dragging it into the editor I was working in. For example, as I watch videos teaching me how to use a program or whatever, I’ll take notes in an editor while I watch the video. Sometimes I want to grab a screenshot to drop into my notes to highlight a particular point. With ScreenFloat I can take that screenshot and have it float in my view where I can then copy it and drop it into my notes immediately instead of digging around in my file structure to complete the same task. The app is a little more powerful than that and I can see how it’ll come in handy for other tasks (like another reviewer mentioned taking a screenshot of server settings and having it simply “float” there while you type it all in instead of having to copy and paste it somewhere) but even just using it in the way that I am it’s a great utility. Well worth the money and I highly recommend it. Thanks, dev!

Update6 months later: I continue to be very impressed with both the app and user support, from the software developer, Mr. Gansrigler-Hrad. Once again, I got a very timely response to a query about a “missing” Print option. It was fixed the next day! Of course not all fixes happen so quickly. While the video screen capture is probably the most complex new addition, I’m most excited by the “Detect text” option. I use it regularly and it works very well. Indeed, from a screenfloat it detects both English and Chinese even if the original target was an image. This is definitely an app to get and to use if you ever take screenshots. I've only had to contact user support once about an issue - but the software developer responded very quickly and in a subsequent update resolved the quirk. I'm very glad I ran across this app.

My previous review still stands, and thanks to the developer for updating it to work with the upcoming Sierra operating system:You may think to yourself, “I don’t see why I’d need this, I can already use the Mac’s built-in screen capture functionality, it’s fine.” I get that, but here’s what you’re missing.In just one day of using your computer try to pay attention to how often you need some information from another window, another space, or another app. You switch from window to window and back again, making sure you got it right. Or maybe you spend time resizing a bunch of things so you can see all of them at the sizes you need to. You might be a designer who needs to temporarily recall some RGB values in a Photoshop palette or dialog box. Or maybe you’re a developer who needs to recall the sizes of a couple of views but can’t have them on the screen at the same time. Boom, ScreenFloat is the answer. Just type your hotkey, drag around the thing you need to recall, then put it out of your mind and switch back to your other task. There’s the info, floating right where you need it, even though that other window/app/space is no longer visible. This app saves me hours of stupid switching back-and-forth or copying-temporarily-to-notepad or resizing windows or dealing with giant full-screen screenshots or writing on paper (heaven forbid!).So, so useful.

This has been so easily integrated into my workflow. This has been so easily integrated into my workflow. I can grab images or text for reference while working on all manner of things from filling out forms, to referring to images for art or 3D modeling creation, to capturing things like texts or other fleeting important info. The fact that the grabbed image floats in front of everything else allows it to remain atop your work so it can be readlity utilized. I you want, you can even scroll your mouse to make the shot partially transparent.My only suggestions for improvement would be to make the shots optionally storable on iCloud or Dropbox so that they can be shared between computers. Also enable right-clicking (or control clicking) in the shots browser window for the actions on your shots, which now require going to the gear icon in the shots browser to select those functions.

ScreenFloat v2.3.5 (2026.01.28) contains the following improvements and bug fixes: = IMPROVEMENTS = - Searching in the Shots Browser has become better. For instance, searching for “design 25” will find a shot titled “Design Proposal 25”, as well as “2025 Design Template”, in addition to the exact phrase - Shots in the Shots Browser's Trash can now be floated not only by double-clicking, but also from the toolbar or by pressing return/enter on the keyboard, just like outside the Trash - You can now change whether or not your mouse cursor should be captured in timed shots - The Copy double-click action now also copies a file in the desired format instead of data, since data is converted internally by the clipboard into tiff and png, thus overwriting the actually desired format - ScreenFloat now shows an alert when it detects that there is no space for its item in the menu bar - You can now drag and drop images and text into the shot markup editor (in addition to copy-paste) - Hover your mouse cursor over a floating shot's dimension / file size information to reveal the shot title - The appearance of widgets in the tinted and inactive states has been improved - When picking a color in the floating shot's Color Picker that already exists in the Recents list, instead of adding that color again, it is moved to the top of the list - Added the “Edit Title, Tags, Notes” menu item to the Shots Browser's contextual menu to make editing metadata accessible from there as well - You can now recapture the previously captured area from ScreenFloat's menu bar item (in addition to press-and-holding the keyboard shortcut) = BUG FIXES = - Fixes a rare crash that could occur when closing the Tags Browser - Changed the title of the floating shot's contextual menu item “Edit Info…” to “Edit Title, Tags, Notes…” to make its functionality more obvious - Fixes a bug causing ScreenFloat's Share extension to not work correctly - Fixes a bug where, under rare circumstances, an image could not be annotated - Fixes a bug where tipping wouldn't work on older versions of macOS - Fixed a bug where the on-the-fly drag-out popover sometimes didn't respect the selected export settings for recordings - The option to copy image data instead of image file paths has been made more accessible (from floating shots, the Shots Browser, and double-click actions) Thank you for using ScreenFloat for Mac.
