PocketPacket started as an APRS client for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad devices, but is also available for the Mac desktop or laptop. The "Automatic Position Reporting System" is a packet communication protocol used by amateur radio operators (hams) around the world, to report position, status, station capabilities, weather or other information in real time. Packets can also be used for broadcasting announcements or one-to-one messaging.
PocketPacket incorporates a software-based TNC, allowing you to directly capture and visualize, or encode and transmit 1200 baud packets (AFSK modulation) using a VHF radio transceiver. With PocketPacket you can also get and send packets over the Internet, by selecting one of the available Tier 2 servers of the global APRS-IS network.
Incoming data is presented on a map, as most packets define some object, with a specific symbol and location. By selecting a symbol, you can view the latest information sent for the corresponding object, as well as the raw packets that produced it. All available objects are also shown in a list, which allows you to search for the ones you are looking for. Messages and bulletins are shown in a separate set of screens, structured like an e-mail client.
With PocketPacket you can follow the status of the APRS network or submit your station's info. Monitor moving objects, get real time weather reports directly from local stations and more. Especially with the iOS version and an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, you can have a full-fledged picture of packet activity in a small, portable package - ideal for field work or the ham shack.

Needs Work

Using a Mac Mini and Rigblaster Nomic. VOX PTT doesn't seem to work, but basic PTT through a USB to Serial adapter seems to be working. I'm having big issues with the mapping interface. I can't move about the map and stations aren't showing up until I refresh them by viewing their transmission log??? Without fluid mapping, it's a waste of time and money. Being a HAM app I would definitly suggest starting a forum for the app usage and problem reporting. Google Groups are free and designed for just this sort of thing. If the issues that people are reporting get fixed it will be a 5 star app. Not there yet.
t works, once you find the audio sweet spot… TX INTERVAL DOES NOT WORK!

UPDATE: I have a SignaLink USB now and it does work with that, including PTT, but unfortunately like many others have said: this program CRASHES far to often. Prior to the SL, I was (attempting) to use VOX (horrible), then I kludged together a PTT solution using a serial module (worked ok 3/4th’s of the time), then went to just getting a SL - which works great. As for the applicaiton itself, its doing what it said it world do. I rate it as “I like it” (the concept),but its not “good” (yet). There is, of course,a LOT of room for improvement. Perhaps the ability for customizde the colors (theme even)? Maybe bring satellite google maps option to the map layout?A couple times a week, I will get a “This application has stopped suddenly” error and need to close it out and restart it. While not a complete show stopper, it is very annoying. I’d love to see this application become rock-solid stable and have uptimes that extend into months on end. I suspect there is a memory leak.Overall, it is could be decent application that I would use - IF IT DIDN’T CRASH SO FREQUENTLY. These future improvements would be nice would be welcomed and make for a very nice application.Summary: This is an app that has great potential. However, a few things really need ironing out:1. The frequency crashing. This needs fixed. Even with APRS-IS set to only RX stations that are relatively close, ~40 KM, the app will crash a couple times per week.2. the TNC software modem needs tweaking. It doesn’t decode more than 3/4th of strong RX’d packets at best.3. There needs to be a VOX delay in the OSX version like the iOS version to help tweak your setup.(This would help the issues with VOX for those that want to just use VOX.)3. The delay between tranmissions seems to have a bug. It does not TX at the interval you set in the settings. The above five issues keep this application from being a serious contender for APRS on the Mac...

I bought this progran since it is the only one I could find for Mac. I downloaded and installed it then tried to get it to work. It acepted my call sign but when I tried to put in my position it would not acept them.I put the first in as 29º 37’ 29” N I tried this way and with dots between the parts. All it did was tell me this was an invalid input. It even did it for the longitude. I have used these settings ever since I started using APRS. On all other programs when I call up the settings it is dead on my house. They need to get the bugs out of their software before they put it up for sale. It is especially bad when you have no contact info. Thank goodness for PayPal.

There is a lot of potential here. But if you turn on the APRS-IS feature, it crahses constantly. If you do local decode it works great, but there is no RF-IS option. The sound decode works really well. I am looking to do a local iGate on my mac mini, PocketPacket is so close. Fix the crashes, add the RF to IS feature. Help local hams! Its a win win. Fix these issues and I will re-rate.
