Master the Fretboard with Fretuoso
Fretuoso is an engaging educational game designed to help you learn the location of notes on the fretboard of the guitar and other stringed instruments. With support for eleven instruments—including 4, 5, and 6-string basses, mandolin, ukulele, and banjo—you can expand your musical knowledge no matter your instrument of choice.
How It Works
Presented with random notes on the fretboard, you choose the correct answer from multiple options. Simply tap the right button to score points and improve your skills! The new Staff Training Mode helps you learn the positions of notes on the musical staff relative to your instrument’s fretboard, making reading sheet music a breeze.
Features
• Train Your Ear and Mind: Enhance your auditory skills while deepening your understanding of your instrument.
• Learn Sheet Music: Master the positions of notes on the musical staff; say goodbye to tabs!
• Eleven Realistic Instruments: Choose from 4 guitars, 3 basses, mandolin, ukulele, and banjo—all with beautiful, lifelike graphics.
• Customized Training: Focus on specific fret ranges or string subsets to target your practice.

What Artists Are Saying
“Learning the notes on the fretboard is key to any guitarist’s development, and Fretuoso is a neat way to get that info burned into your brain without having to carry a guitar everywhere you go. Pretty cool!”
— Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, Mike Keneally)
“This is one of the best apps I’ve seen in a while. It’s simple, fun, and educational. Very useful for guitar players, as many tend to play by ear and not focus on knowing the fretboard.”
— Rick Musallam (Mike Keneally, Gryphon Labs)

Very useful app. I’ve been using it every day to learn the fret board. One thing that bugs me a little bit. The random number generator that picks a new note for you to identify seems like it almost get stuck going back-and-forth between the same couple of notes longer than randomness would allow. I only do one string at a time, I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it. Edit. A few months later… I continue to use and enjoy the app daily, but I’m still frustrated. The random number generator doesn’t work randomly at times and just get stuck oscillating between two notes for an irritating a long time. Will the developers please take a look at this?
amazing little app
J20142014
learned the guitar fretboard practically overnight with this app 🎸also was settled using tab until I turned on the staff-notes option. Unbelievably helpful to now read sheet music showing octavesNot gonna drop it down to 4 stars for this but would have an option to fix the neck in place so the nut is always visible. Some of us don’t so much use fret numbers but view the neck graphically using inlays/markers
Partially Fixed

Another update:App back to being “mostly great”... can’t turn off sounding the notes. Everything else is fixed.————————————-Update: now neither app will open (only goes to gray screen and then hangs until it times out and returns to my desktop). It feels like it may have something to do with trying to sync with the cloud and then crashes. I did use this app every day. Now I can’t get it to run.I am on an iPad Pro 11.0 w/256 G memory and LOTS of available storage and latest iOS.—————————-I owned both apps and purchased “all” instruments on both apps ($14). Now, it appears, I only need one of the apps to have on my iPad so after updating today, every time I open either app I have to reset the “restore purchases”... I’m sure this is just a glitch that needs to be corrected. I only rated the app one star so the developer will be sure to see it. When this is corrected I will again rate it 5 stars and remove this review. Thanks!
Developer Response
Thank you for the report. We’ll have a new update out very soon with fixes for this and other issues.
Paid for the full version, kinda regretting it.

Generally speaking the app has a very dated Web 2.0 looking interface and it’s lacking in all but the most basic features that other software offers. Want to practice with only naturals? Sorry! Want to specify *any* options in ‘game’ mode? Again, nope. Want to increase the difficulty and skip the first 20 or so levels of basic 5 fret quizzing? Sorry! I was hoping for a ‘note hunter’ mode where you could be given a note and have to track them all down. This app is super basic, practice mode and a progressive difficulty quiz mode, that’s it. I recommend looking a Fretonomy instead.
Developer Response
Thanks for the feedback. We do have a lot of training options available, and you can limit notes to just naturals, or even particular scales if you want. You can also focus on particular areas of the fretboard.Game mode is very limited in terms of options because of the scoring in leaderboards; every single player needs to be subject to the same rules of the game so that they can't artificially game themselves to the top of the global leaderboards. However if what you want is advanced training options, all of that is available in the training modes. There's just no scoring and levels, but statistics tracking and so on still applies.
Minor bug fixes and improvements.
