New York Cloud is a guide to the city written the way somebody who has walked it would tell you about it - what to see, when to go, which door to come in by, and what is worth skipping.
Nineteen sections and a hundred and ninety places. Landmarks, museums, neighborhoods, parks, food, markets and shopping, nightlife, music, stage and screen, writers, sport, transport, seasons, day trips, free things, and the practical business of getting around.
Every entry is a short read with the detail that actually matters. The crown of the Statue of Liberty is 162 stairs and one ticket per person every six months. The Village Vanguard seats first come, first served, and the pillar is what you get if you arrive at eight. The uptown platform at some stations is across the street, not across the tracks.
NEW YORK TALK
Fifty-one words and phrases the city really uses - bodega, schlep, on line, a regular coffee, fuhgeddaboudit - each with what it means, a sentence putting it to work, and how it is said when the pronunciation is the catch. Tap any one to hear it read aloud by a New York voice. Choose a man or a woman. The recordings are in the app, so they work on the subway with no signal at all.
