「金馬獎」自民國五十一年創辦,起初只是政府為促進國片製作與肯定優秀影人所舉辦的獎勵競賽。「金馬」二字取自於金門、馬祖的頭一字組合而成;亦符合全球主要影展皆以「金字招牌」為號召的潮流。創辦至今,全名已變更為「台北金馬影展」,不僅是台灣年度最重要的電影文化盛事,主要活動亦擴及四大主軸:金馬獎,已成為華語暨華人電影創作的最高榮譽;金馬國際影展,則是國人接觸各國傑出電影的最佳平台;金馬創投會議,竭力提供影視創作者與投資發行方合作機會;金馬電影學院,藉由大師傳承以提升年輕創作者的能力與視野。
