Make a first gen iPad useable again!!!

It’s 2020 and you have a first gen iPad that seems fine and you’d like to use it. Apple stopped supporting it years ago though and iTunes doesn’t even see it. Short of booting up a really old Mac to manage your music, music playlists, PDFs, text documents, videos, pictures, etc you might think you’re screwed. Enter AirDisk Pro, which contains players and editors for all media types that exceed any of the stand alone apps that still function on old iOS devices. You can upload from a web browser, your Mac, Dropbox or iCloud. It handles decompressing zips, rars, etc. It Supports most modern media file types. It edits text, password encrypts your files, records voice memos, etc, etc. Hell, it un-bricked my first gen iPad, it’s a bloody miracle. Best value in an app I’ve ever seen!

I bought the Pro version (local, no cloud storage) and tried it between my iPhone 14 Pro (latest iOS 16.1.2) and my MacBook Pro 16 M1 Max (latest MacOS 13.0.1 Ventura). I had to figure out on my own that in order to even connect, I had to go into Settings and set a password (no indication that this was required). At that point, I could connect via Finder as Guest (which I thought odd, because I have the system Guest account disabled), as well as via a web browser ... once I got there, the (short but sweet) Help instructions were easy enough to follow and I was able to transfer a couple of test files (a PDF and a TXT) quickly and easily ... The on-screen instructions on the iPhone app tell you not to close that open window on the iPhone, or file transfer connectivity will be lost - fair enough. The BIG irritation for me is that, while I did not close the window, as soon as my iPhone goes into automatic lock screen (AutoLock) after 30 seconds, the connectivity is lost! So it's not just a matter of not closing the window - you cannot even let your iPhone go into lockscreen mode! Apparently, I have to constantly attend to and tap the iPhone (at the same time I'm concentrating on transferring files on my Mac) in order to make sure that the iPhone does not lose connectivity. Yes, I could change my iPhone settings to lengthen or even disable AutoLock every time I want to use this app, but who wants to have to do that everytime just to run one app? That's a hassle. Developer - is there any way to work around this? Either way, this is something that should probably be documented in the Help screen. If not for this issue, I would give it 4-5 stars, but because of this annoyance I am giving it 3 stars. Will change if there is a fix or a different workaround that I am unaware of . . .

I just tested this app out with my MacBook Pro and it works like charm. You simply input the op address given to you in the app into your computer and then you just drag and drop files back and forth between the two instantly! This process is not only near instantaneous but it is also a lot more convenient with less restrictions that transferring data through iTunes! The whole process is clean, quick, and the user interface is user friendly and very simple to navigate with simple clear directions and many options to manage your files such as for photos a "save to camera roll". I didn't know this type of file transfer was possible over wifi! 5 stars all the way! It turns out I'm keeping this app!

• If you’re like me & previously paid for the “pro” version of this app you’ll be surprised to find that all those “pro” features are now locked behind subscription plans which developer expects you to pay for again—attempting to use the “restore purchase” option does nothing. • I bought this app a couple of years ago because it was very useful, highly functional, and had a clean UI. It was very convenient to use but now the app has permanent ads & pop-ups bugging you to pay for “premium” features like being able to sync with cloud storage services… of which they only support three (if you don’t use iCloud or Dropbox tough luck!). The app is marginally functional now and is so obnoxious to use because the dev’s focus is making the app a cash grab rather than something useful. There are better alternatives to this app turned advertisement. Don’t support greedy developers that treat their customers like this.
