I’ll preface my review by saying I am on a 2016 iPhone SE running iOS 15. Maybe that’s exacerbating the issues I’m experiencing, and maybe not.The iOS VLC app has been a bit buggy for as long as I’ve used it, but always within the realm of usability. I use it because it lets me transfer local music files to my phone without the trash heap that is iTunes, and for that I can put up with occasional skipped tracks on albums and similar minor annoyances.Enter the most recent update which introduced CarPlay support. I was excited when I first saw the changelog as the car is where I do most of my listening, and proper CarPlay support should only make that easier… or so I thought. But after wrangling with it all day yesterday, I’ve found that the app is so buggy as to be genuinely unusable at this point. It’s extremely slow and causes not just CarPlay but my phone itself to lock up while it loads, the skip and rewind buttons work only on rare occasions, and somehow the audio queue feature is completely broken. I’ll start an album, and after the first song it will play another at random (changes every time, as if shuffle is enabled even though it is not) before the “queue” ends. At this point if I try to return to the main menu on CarPlay nothing happens, and the app on my phone is locked up as well so I’m forced to force close it and start over. All in all, it just isn’t usable in the car at the moment. Hopefully this is fixed soon or, in the meantime, an option is provided to let us disable CarPlay.
