Backups on your schedule, never while you work. Live progress in the menu bar, an alert when a backup fails, and a record of every backup on every disk.
Backup Scheduler tells Time Machine when to back up your Mac: every few hours, at set times, or when you step away. It shows every backup as it happens and tells you when one fails or a disk falls behind.
ANY SCHEDULE, NEVER IN YOUR WAY
• Every 10 minutes to once a week, or at set times on the days you choose
• Waits until you take a break, so a backup never slows you down
• Holds off on battery, in Low Power Mode, during calls and on a hotspot
• Allowed hours and days, even across midnight
• Catches up after sleep
ALWAYS KNOW IT WORKED
• Live progress in the menu bar: percent, size and time left
• An alert when a backup fails or a disk hasn't been backed up for days
EVERY DISK AT A GLANCE
• Free space, the last and the oldest backup for each disk
• Give a disk its own schedule, leave it out, or back up as soon as it's plugged in
EVERY BACKUP ON RECORD
• Every backup on every disk, how long it took, and a chart of the last 90 days
FASTER BACKUPS
• Skip caches, Downloads, Xcode files, simulators, Docker and virtual machines with one click, so each backup copies less
AND ALSO
• Pause backups for an hour, until tomorrow or until you resume
• Shortcuts actions to start, stop and pause backups, or to get the date of the last one
• A warning when Time Machine also runs its own schedule, and for Time Capsule disks that macOS 27 can't use
• Opens at login and lives in the menu bar. The Dock icon is up to you
• No account and no tracking: nothing leaves your Mac
THE FREE HELPER
App Store apps can't start Time Machine on their own, so starting backups needs a free helper from our website. It takes about a minute. Without it, Backup Scheduler reminds you when a backup is due and you start it from the Time Machine menu.
ONE SETTING TO CHANGE
In Time Machine settings, set Backup Frequency to Manually. Then only your schedule decides when backups run. Backup Scheduler tells you if Time Machine is still set to back up on its own.
QUESTIONS
Does it back up while my Mac sleeps?
Backups start while you're logged in and the Mac is awake. A backup that was due during sleep runs soon after the Mac wakes.
Does it replace Time Machine?
No. Time Machine still makes the backups, to the disks you chose in Time Machine settings. Backup Scheduler decides when, and keeps an eye on every backup.
I used an older version. Do my settings carry over?
Yes. Your interval, idle time and allowed hours carry over, and the helper you already installed keeps working.

Vaguely Stats
Follow the instructions, the App will ask you to download an Applescript that adds the service that makes it work properly, you can open that in the Editor that came with your Mac and see if it’s doing anything you don’t want. Beyond that and setup correctly? Fantastic. I’d rather pay $5 than spend a few hours writing my own method from scratch. My only complaint and I’m not docking stars for it, I’d like finer tuning or advanced tuning for when backups occur/stop. I’m running a server, during high load times, it’d be great to be able to set task priority %, or backups during low task %. Nitpicky stuff. Completely worth $5.
Backup when idle for X minutes does not work as expected
CruftSkinner
The biggest issue I have with Time Machine is high resource usage after awakening from sleep. Typically, multilple processes contend for resources while my Mac performs various houskeeping duties if I’ve stepped away for a while. I had hoped that Backup Scheduler would delay Time Machine activity until I had taken a break. It does not do this. As soon as the desktop appears after typing in my password Backup Scheduler is already banging away on my Time Capsule backup drive. Time Machine activity shows hundreds of megabytes being backed up, which leads me to believe that the not only does the “backup when idle” function NOT work on wakeup, but it can’t be working AFTER I take a break either. Otherwise there wouldn’t be that much stale data that requires refreshing since I last used the system.Backup Scheduler seems to work OK for blocking the default hourly Time Machine schedule, but there are other ways to edit this schedule without purchasing Backup Scheduler.
WARNING: Doesn’t actually start backups; wants you to install non-App Store script
Duggadugdug
Ridiculous. This app doesn’t do anything more than pop up a reminder to manually start a Time Machine backup (pointless and something I can do without giving $5 to the developer), unless you install a script from a 3rd-party site, which is a big red flag: If a developer doesn’t want to incorporate something that essential into the actual App Store product, which is subject to Apple quality control and virus/malware screening, then something fishy is afoot. I’m not about to take that chance and — based on some of the bad reviews by those who did — it sounds like the offsite script may not even work properly. Extremely misleading and suspicious. After purchasing, installing, and trying this bogus product, I am now extremely skeptical of the validity of all of the 5-star reviews posted. Now I just need to figure out how to pursue a refund, and report this scheme to Apple...
Backup Scheduler - A Godsend to Me
Medawes
I’m a solo consultant and venture investor with a large number of simulataneoud projects and so use a CRM to keep me organized. This often competes with my disk drive tfor attention when Time Machine back ups occur and everything boggs way down - a siutuation I can’t afford. Backup Scheduler completely resolved that problem. Now, I haven’t had a need to restore from memory, so,I’m trusting that works, but through the dashboard I have every incication that it will. Its a simple solution that gas made my life easier. One suggestion - their response time to emails is a little slow,so be patient with questions.
