Two. That’s how many words you’re allowed to try before the app locks down to demand credit card info before a trial period can begin - and one of those words is “soft-serve ice cream”. With my remaining word I took a picture of a smartphone, and the Japanese word it offered was “sumatofon” which isn’t incorrect but it’s the much less commonly used version, with “sumaho” being the much more common. This, after asking me if I was interested in learning everyday vocabulary, and with only a single effort to go on not to mention the buggy “sticker effect” which seems to need excellent lighting and objects to be posed against a clean backdrop, cratered my desire to sign up for an automatically renewing “free trial”. To wit, the app launches with a (micro) free trial already - the cynic in me sees an effort to hide the bugs behind the signup, hoping just enough subscribers will forget to unsubscribe once they’ve discovered them.
Sorry the preview felt too limited; we'll review the subscription prompts, everyday Japanese vocabulary choices, and sticker cutout reliability in different lighting.
