We are all connected to nature in cultural, spiritual, social, and biological ways. The Outdoor Afro App provides connection between Black nature leaders and nature lovers—and
everyone who loves connecting with people who love nature.
Much more than a trails app, Outdoor Afro lets you discover vetted, local nature spots, trails, and destinations for all of your favorite sports, play, lifestyle, wellness, and exercise activities.
Our mission is to inspire and support Black connection, leadership, and wellness in nature, so we’ve made it easy to find your fit in outdoor activities—on your own or with expert guides
and enthusiasts who share their recommended spots and expertise, lead guided experiences, and become part of your community.
Outdoor Afro rewards its most active users with gear, badges and even old school patches and badges, free and discounted gear and other goodies. Use Outdoor Afro to:

• Civic leaders and organizations that can help preserve and conserve your local public lands, waterways, and wildlife
Amazing that this organization put the effort in to create an app to better connect with community!! I’m so excited to engage with it and to see a community-based organization pour into themselves this way … especially in the age of tech monopolies and non-consensual data predation from big companies... While the app is in its early stages, it is an awesome tool and will only evolve to include more seamless features and integration.
Gratitudes
OARRB
So grateful for this organization and the volunteer leaders who get us outside in community. The app is an exciting offering and am looking forward to improvements. As of now, i miss the ease of use with meetup, the sense of community and transparency with knowing who was going to be attending an event, photosharing, and messaging with ease. While joining múltiple chapter meetups/FB groups was cumbersome, it organized the locations easily and allowed easier search for activities and leaders. Would love the option to have to app organized by chapter, even as an opt in/out personlization. In app payment or links from app is definitely needed. Mine keeps defaulting to a region/city I do not live in and I have been unable to message leaders except when going through an event they are leading. Will use help function to sort this out if possible.
Work in progress
Nellie Bell’s Farm
The app has a lot of activities listed and being able to fill out the waiver online is definitely better than the old Meetup process. However, it’s difficult to search for activities because location is not a filter option. Instead, the app wants to set a location on you as the user, which is unnecessary and doesn’t always meet the goal. Also, my suggested activities aren’t linked to the leaders that I follow. I’m not sure of the benefit of following the leaders. The leaders also aren’t listed my location. So, unless you know all the names of the leaders in your target area as they were entered in the app, you can’t find them. I’m hopeful that the app will continue to improve because I strongly believe in the mission and function of the organization.
Developer Response
Thank you for your feedback! The latest app version on the app store now includes the ability to change your location on the homepage. Also, the suggested activities and the leader logic on the homepage is already scheduled to be updated/released in the next 2 weeks.
Too Much Unnecessary Information
Tamptk
The app isn’t easy to use. Even with the updates the first thing users see are activities happening in states we don’t live in. Recommendations and Featured Content should be on secondary pages, not taking up three-fourths of the Home page. If the purpose of the app is for the Black community to gather together, why aren’t all upcoming events visible on the Home page and in calendar order? Why do we need to hunt for them? Also, is anyone tracking event attendance since the creation of the app? It’s so difficult to use that we’ve seen a decline in scheduling/attendance in our area.
Developer Response
Thank you for your feedback. Can you make sure your app is on the latest version? You should see an option to exit the internal post-trip survey that the app asks users to complete. If you're still havin an issue, can you reach out to our team at sf@outdoorafro.org? We'd love to help! Please note that the review/feedback the app was asking for is not public but internal.Thank you!
