New on Mac: your Mac's camera watches the room while you're out, and you check in from your iPhone. Or watch your cameras from your desk. No account, no hub to buy. A MacBook with a tired battery, the iMac nobody uses, an old iPhone: each can watch the place while you're out. Watch from your iPhone, or from a Mac's big screen, with alerts even after you close the window. Encrypted end to end. Talk through it. Sound a siren. Replay what it saw. No account to create, no hub to buy, no footage handed to anyone. Pairing is one QR scan, and that QR code is the encryption key itself, which is why RECAM keeps it out of screenshots and screen sharing. I built RECAM because the devices we stop using are better cameras than most you can buy, and because I did not want my living room living on somebody else's server. MAKE A MAC THE CAMERA • Any Mac on macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple silicon or Intel. You watch it from your iPhone, iPad or another Mac • It films with the built-in camera, a USB webcam, or your iPhone through Continuity Camera (macOS 14 or later): up to 1080p at 30 fps, if the webcam can • Close the window and it keeps watching: the RECAM icon in the menu bar shows it and stops it • It keeps the Mac awake while it streams; the display can sleep. Keep a laptop's lid open: closing it puts the Mac to sleep, and a sleeping Mac films nothing • Turn on Open RECAM at login, and a Mac kept for the job comes back as a camera when it restarts and logs in • It reports on itself: battery on a MacBook, heat, Low Power Mode, standby, a volume too low for the siren WATCH FROM YOUR MAC • Your cameras in a sidebar, live video in the window, full screen with ⌘F • Keyboard first: ⌘1 to ⌘9 jump to a camera, ⌘R records, ⌘T talks, ⌘⇧S sounds the siren • Alerts land in Notification Center. Close the window and RECAM waits in the menu bar so they keep coming • Lock RECAM with Touch ID, or your password • To add a camera, scan its QR code with the Mac's own camera, built-in or USB Live video goes directly from device to device when your network allows it, otherwise through a relay that never holds the key, so it cannot see what it carries. REPLAY WHAT THE CAMERA SAW (Pro) • Switch the live view to recorded clips: pause, previous, next, back to live • Clips record when motion or sound sets them off, or the moment any viewer hits record • They stay on the camera device (a Mac records to its own disk) and nowhere else, auto-deleted after 1, 7 or 30 days or never, within 100 clips and roughly 2 GB TALK, DETER AND SOOTHE (Pro) • Push to talk from your Mac's microphone: up to thirty seconds, played out loud on the camera. Delivered, not a call • Remote siren for up to five minutes, after you confirm: a mis-click is a painful noise in someone's home • On a Baby Phone camera, a lullaby or white noise takes the siren's place. It can never sound the siren there DETECTION STAYS ON THE DEVICE • Human and animal detection • More than forty sounds you arm one by one: glass breaking, a smoke alarm, a baby crying, a dog barking • Baby face monitoring tells you when your baby's face is no longer visible to the camera, for example when it looks covered • Profiles (Baby Phone, Pet Watcher, Home Security) retune what it watches and listens for • All of it runs on the camera itself. Nothing is shipped off to be analysed SHARING Pair someone else with a QR code: they watch from their own iPhone, iPad or Mac. ONE ROLE AT A TIME A Mac watches or is watched, and Switch Role… changes it. RECAM PRO Your first three days include live video and alerts. After that, both are part of RECAM Pro, a monthly or yearly subscription that also adds clip replay, the siren or a lullaby, and push to talk. One subscription covers your iPhone, iPad and Mac on the same Apple Account. Pro comes from the camera owner's account, so the people they share a camera with need no subscription of their own.
