A major update (v2.0) is live!
Bookmarks Star for Safari is a privacy-focused Safari extension that adds a color-configurable star icon to the Safari browser toolbar. The star icon in the Safari toolbar will automatically change its color when you open an already bookmarked webpage, visually indicating the current page's bookmark status in real-time (will show a colored star for bookmarked pages, will remain gray for non-bookmarked pages).
Additionally, clicking the icon displays the folder path(s) where the bookmark is located, as well as the bookmark name and URL.
** Starting from v2.0, the extension does not use a content script, so Safari no more shows the scary "This extension can access sensitive info..." warning in the Safari extensions menu!
Safari Bookmarks Star only reads the URL of the current page you're visiting to check if it is bookmarked or not. No other data/content/info is read from the page and no data leaves your computer at any time.
----------------------------------------------------
Bookmarks Star is a lightweight Safari extension that:
- Automatically shows if a webpage is in your Safari bookmarks or not in real-time with a color-configurable star icon.
- Shows the current webpage's bookmark folder location, bookmark name and the URL when you click on the star icon.
- Creates a report of all your duplicate bookmarks on demand.
- Synchronizes bookmark status from various devices through iCloud in real-time.
- The extension also adds a star icon to the Mac menu bar to manage the companion app.
Features:
- Lightweight and optimized: The extension will perform checks only on the active & in-focus tab, so the number of tabs/windows open will not affect the performance.
- Privacy-first approach: Bookmarks Star extension only needs to know the URL of the webpage you're visiting. It NEVER reads/views/edits any content on the page. The extension works entirely locally on your Mac. Your bookmarks, browsing history, webpage content or any data are NEVER sent to external servers. Everything stays securely on your computer.
FAQ:
1. What is the performance impact of using this extension?
Getting the bookmark status of the active tab takes around 5-15 milliseconds, getting the folder paths (on demand) takes around 20-40 milliseconds. Number of open tabs does not affect the performance as it only performs a URL check for the active & in-focus tab.
2. How intrusive is this extension? Does it read visited website's data/content or track my activities?
The extension only reads the URL of the active tab to see if it is in your Safari bookmarks or not. It does not read/edit/track/store any other page data or the page content at any time.
3. Do you use any third party services like analytics or tracking?
No. Privacy is important to me. The extension does not use any third party services like analytics or tracking. No data is sent/received to/from anywhere outside your computer by the extension. The extension and its container app are self-contained.
4. Is bookmark status synchronized across devices?
Yes, e.g. when you add a page to your Safari bookmarks on your iPhone/iPad, iCloud will auto-update your Safari bookmarks file in your Mac. When iCloud sync happens, Bookmarks Star extension will pick up this change and the icon color in your browser will be updated instantly (if it is the currently active browser tab on your Mac).
5. Does this extension edit any files on my Mac, including the Safari bookmarks file?
No, this extension only READS the Safari bookmarks file and nothing else. It does not edit any files or view/change any other files on your Mac.

Since I like using Safari and I rely on Safari bookmarks, this was a project initially I did for my own use. Abstracting the complex webpage processes from the user and updating the star icon color reliably and efficiently was my main goal. I hope you'll like the extension!
This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Finally a way to see if a page is already bookmarked
Rbukha
This extension is very straightforward in showing you if you’ve already gotten a page bookmarked. Something missing is showing what it’s called in your bookmarks. One other wish: I’d also like to have a check to make sure the page isn’t already bookmarked multiple times and if so a resolution for tht.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback. I'm working on an update to show the name of the bookmark in the popup window and it should be relased soon! Re your other wish: The extension actually shows if a page is bookmarked more than once, that's why I initially developed the extension for myself! :) (The app window that appears when you click on the extension icon lists all the bookmark locations/folders of the page). Thank you!
A Must-Have for Safari Bookmark Management!

I’ve been searching for a tool like Bookmark Manager for Safari for ages, and I’m so glad I finally found it! This app makes it incredibly easy to find and remove duplicate bookmarks, clean up dead links, and organize everything just the way I want. The interface is straightforward, and the features work exactly as described. It’s totally worth the price for the convenience and peace of mind it brings. Thank you so much to the developer for creating this essential app for Safari users! Highly recommended!

Hello! Thank you for your feedback!Unfortunately, if an extension even has 1 line of content script in it, Apple shows this warning. So, many Safari extensions show this (scary) warning message. Bookmarks Star for Safari needs to use a basic content script to read the URL and change the star icon color. It does not read/view/alter/store any other data from your browser - just the URL.Below are the relevant sections from the app FAQ:- Why is there a privacy warning in Safari Extension settings menu?In order to change icon colors in real-time, the extension has to use a lightweight content script, that is why Safari shows a "This extension can read and alter webpages you visit" message by default. The extension does not read/edit/track/store any webpage content at any time.- How intrusive is this extension? Does it read visited website's data/content or track my activities? The extension only reads the URL of the active tab to see if it is in your Safari bookmarks or not. It does not read/edit/track/store any other page data or the page content at any time.- Do you use any third party services like analytics or tracking? No. Privacy is important to me. The extension does not use any third party services like analytics or tracking. No data is sent/received to/from anywhere outside your computer by the app. The extension and its container app are self-contained.Hope that helps!Best,Ozgur
