WhenThing
Track Anything, See Patterns
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
WhenThing is a tracking tool that aims to be clean, simple, and unobtrusive. It can be used to track and to anaylse patterns in personal behaviour, your health, or almost anything around you.
WhenThing was designed out of a desire for a tool to easily and quietly track certain personal events and patterns. It is at least a little opinionated about the use of a habit tracker in general, with several key things in mind:
- Do One Thing™: All patterns start with one event. The tiniest thing is progress. Not a real trademark.
- Introspection is power: Change is easier to achieve when you know what you are changing.
With those things in mind, what I didn't want to do with this app is make judgements about how the tool must be used beyond that, or about what people find helpful or hurtful. There are no nags, no reminders, no pep-talks, no gamification. We do enable you to set goals for the things you're tracking, and there's some analysis there that you can look at, but you don't get any badges!
Big or small, anything is helpful here. Want to remember every time you pulled weeds out of the garden bed? Track it! Need to note when you took that medication so you don't take it again, and you don't want The Man to see? Track it!
How do you feel, on a scale of 1-10? What does 10 mean? What if 10 means something different tomorrow?
We take that question away with Relative Level Things. Instead of picking a 1-10 value, pick a value relative to the last value you recorded. We can still graph it, don't worry. It's not the number that counts, it's the direction it's going in. Or maybe not: You decide!
Maybe you want to know how much your knees hurt after you've pulled weeds out of that garden bed? Well, have a look at a chart of "Knee pain" overlaid with "Weeding". There are any number of combinations to track, that fun is up to you!
Want to bring data from another source and use it in WhenThing? Or get your data out of the app and use it somewhere else? We've enabled data import and export in CSV or JSON format.
WhenThing is free to use, for tracking up to three Things (we capitalise Thing here!), and a small payment unlocks import/export and lets you add as many Things as you need.
