SoundBar - Audio Visualizer & Mic Monitor
See your sound. Monitor your mic. Always in your menu bar.
SoundBar is two tools in one, a professional microphone level meter for podcasters and broadcasters, and a beautiful real-time audio visualizer for your music and apps. Both live quietly in your menu bar, always visible, never in the way.

Great developer response

I originally bought this app to be able to monitor my microphone levels via menu bar icon, but I realized after purchasing it that it didn’t have that functionality yet. On a whim I emailed the developer, and within days they had an update that introduced that exact functionality. Within a month the developer emailed me again to let me know about another update extending the functionality! So I’m happy with the app itself and even happier about the communication and outreach from the developer!

Thank you so much for the kind review, Gary! I'm really glad the microphone monitoring feature is working well for you. Your original message actually helped shape that update, so I truly appreciate you taking the time to reach out and share your feedback.I’m continuing to improve SoundBar based on user suggestions, so if you ever have ideas or run into anything that could be better, feel free to contact me anytime. Thanks again for the support and enjoy monitoring those levels!
Less than I had hoped

What I wanted out of this app was some old school analog VU meters in my menu bar. This was strictly for the aesthetic. Unfortunately the meter was too small on my 32” monitor to distinguish anything other than an illuminated rectangle. And for some reason I only got one meter instead of two. I switched to a different visualization hoping to get the old school segmented LED meters. This style would have fit better in the menu bar but, again, I only got one bar and it was not segmented and barely moved. In a Reddit discussion, the developer sounded like he was considering a desktop widget which would allow the meters to be big enough to see. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like this idea was pursued. Oh well. I requested a refund from Apple.

Hi,Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I truly appreciate it.SoundBar is designed as a lightweight menu bar utility so its size is intentionally compact to fit within macOS constraints. That said, stereo visualization is available in the settings, and I’m sorry that wasn’t immediately clear.I also understand your interest in larger, old-school analog VU meters (I love them too). Expanding visualization options, including potentially larger or more detailed views, is something I’m actively working on.Your feedback is genuinely helpful in shaping future updates. If you’d ever like to give it another try, I’d be happy to hear your thoughts again.
* Fixed an issue where microphone visualizations could update at a very low frame rate on some systems.
* Mic monitoring is now smooth and responsive as expected
* Thanks to users who reported this and helped track it down
