3) Emotions-Based Interaction
On JOY, the focus is on how a post makes you feel rather than how many likes or comments it gets. When viewing a post, you can choose from five emotions that represent how the photo makes you feel. These emotions are private—only the person who posted the photo will be notified of your response, not the public. This eliminates the pressure of public validation and helps to create a safe space free of negative comparisons or anxiety-driven behaviour.
4) The Daily Mood Check-In
When you first open the JOY app each day, you’ll be asked, "How do you feel today?" You must select one of five emotions, representing how you're feeling at that moment. Whether you're feeling joyful, okay, sad, or something else, this helps set the tone for your day. If you select okay or sad, your friends are notified, encouraging them to send you a postie to brighten your day. This ensures you’re never alone and always have a support system to turn to.
5) No Public Likes or Comments
JOY’s innovative approach eliminates the typical like-button and comment sections, replacing them with private, meaningful interactions. By removing the pressure of public validation, JOY offers a refreshing alternative to the negativity and competition often seen in other apps.
