Footnotes is your walking journal. Every walk is quietly tracked and elegantly visualized, capturing your route, steps, distance, and duration.
Footnotes lets you record voice notes that are automatically transcribed into text, take photos, and preserve those fleeting thoughts and moments that make each walk unique.
Unlike fitness apps, Footnotes avoids cluttered metrics, calorie counts, or competitive goals. It’s not about performance or social validation, it’s about reflection, presence, and the simple pleasure of walking.
A one-time purchase, not another subscription. For the price of a coffee, you get lifetime access to Footnotes, including all future updates and features. No recurring fees. No hidden plans. Your walks and thoughts belong to you, and so does the app.
Privacy first. Always. Footnotes never sends your data to external servers. Everything, your routes, notes, and photos stays securely stored on your iPhone and can be privately synced through iCloud if you wish. You remain in complete control of your memories.
Your feedback truly matters so please consider leaving a rating or sharing suggestions for future updates. We’d love to hear from you!
Footnotes is your walking diary: a companion for mindful walking and reflective thinking, where steps meet thoughts.
No sub. No login. No games. That alone earned 3 stars. Unfortunately, that list of “no” includes no interplay with Apple Health nor Apple Watch. Any walk conducted outside the app doesn’t exist. I’m not looking for another receptacle for my data, which just adds confusion. I crave an app pulling in Apple Health data, with room for my notes as well. This ain’t it, but I respect the dev’s right to design whatever app s/he wants. Oh well, back to searching.
Developer Response
Thank you for taking the time to write this. You're right that Footnotes only knows about walks you record inside the app. That's a deliberate choice for now: the route, the steps and the notes are captured together in the moment, which is what makes each entry feel like a page rather than a data row. But you're not the only one asking for Apple Health, and I hear the point about not wanting another silo. Importing walks from Health so you can attach notes to them is on my list, and reviews like yours move it up. Either way, thanks for giving it a fair look!
This release introduces the first version of Footnotes Metrics, a new way to see your walking activity at a glance, with stats for the current week, month, and past year.
You can now take your walks with you. Every walk can be exported from the ··· menu. Export Walk creates a ZIP file containing a Markdown file, your route as a GPX file, and all your voice notes and photos. Everything is linked using relative paths, so you can drop the folder straight into Obsidian or any Markdown reader. Voice notes include their transcriptions, and each note preserves the time and location where it was captured.
You can also use Export Route to share just the GPX file, ready to import into Wikiloc, Garmin, or Strava. Walks recorded with this version and later include timestamps and elevation data for each point, making them compatible with Strava too.
Behind the scenes, we’ve also done a major round of performance improvements and code cleanup to keep Footnotes fast and reliable as your walking history grows.
I hope you enjoy the update. If you have any feedback or run into an issue, you can reach me directly through Settings > Got Feedback?
And if you’re enjoying Footnotes, leaving a review on the App Store really helps more people discover the app.
Happy walking!
