Orme's Recoil Index

A tool for gauging recoil.

Free · Designed for iPad

Now with dynamic recoil feedback! Feel the kick of your calculations with custom haptics and a new visual shake effect. "Orme's Recoil Index" is a practical yet refined utility for shooters, sportsmen, collectors, and curious minds alike. Designed in the spirit of Orme Dumas—collector, storyteller, and connoisseur of curious contraptions—this tool helps demystify the science of firearm recoil. Whether you're comparing vintage revolvers or dialing in your precision rifle setup, Orme offers you a gentleman’s view of felt recoil. The app uses detailed ballistics modeling to calculate recoil energy, velocity, and bullet dynamics. Simply enter your rifle or revolver specs—weight, barrel twist, bullet diameter, velocity, powder charge—and get instant feedback on expected recoil energy, angular spin, and most importantly... comfort. Features: - NEW! Dynamic visual and haptic feedback to simulate felt recoil. - Supports rifle and revolver inputs - Accounts for muzzle brakes and suppressors - Uses twist rate and bullet dimensions to estimate spin and angular velocity - Assigns a comfort level using Orme’s delightfully dry labels like “Manageable with Tea” or “Call the Medic” - Color-coded feedback and a gentle UI aesthetic designed for field or fireside use Who’s it for? - Firearms enthusiasts wanting to compare recoil across platforms - Collectors cataloguing vintage arms - Precision shooters refining setup - Ballistics nerds and Orme aficionados alike This app collects no personal data, displays no ads, and exists solely to serve the inquisitive mind with style and respect. A companion to The Abiqua Collection, a growing archive of American firearm history.

This update introduces a new layer of immersion to your recoil calculations! • Dynamic Recoil Feedback: Now, in addition to the numbers, you'll experience a visual "shake" and physical haptic feedback on supported devices. • Feel the Kick: The intensity of the shake and the character of the haptic pattern are directly tied to the five Comfort Levels. A "Fine Afternoon" feels like a crisp tap, while "Consult a Bonesetter" delivers a powerful kick and shudder you can really feel! • UX Improvements: Added a "Done" button to the numeric keyboard for easier data entry on iPhone.
