This update is mostly about screen sizes: the grid turns with your iPhone, and the app is ready for iPhone Duo. Videos from iCloud no longer freeze, and there is a new place to tell me what you would like next. Highlights - The grid turns to landscape on iPhone, with more photos in each row. - On This Day is ready for iPhone Duo. - New Feature Requests board: suggest ideas and vote on others. - Photo Size lets you choose how large photos appear in the grid. (Pro) Grid - The grid now rotates to landscape on iPhone. - Wider screens show more columns, so photos keep about the same size in landscape, on iPad and on Mac. - The Column Count setting is now called Photo Size, and it shows a live preview of the grid. (Pro) - Photos in the grid stay sharp after you rotate, resize the window or change the photo size. iPhone Duo - The grid and fullscreen adjust when you fold, unfold or rotate your iPhone Duo. - On the closed iPhone Duo, the buttons sit in the bar at the side of the screen, and a photo fills the whole screen when you hide them. Fullscreen - The buttons at the top have a new look, with the actions grouped together. - Photos and Live Photos load at the full size of the window on iPad, Mac and the open iPhone Duo. Videos - Videos stored in iCloud start quickly and no longer freeze while they play. They stream at a smaller size; videos on your iPhone still play in full quality. - A spinner shows while a video waits for more data, so a short pause no longer looks like a frozen picture. Feature Requests - Settings › Support & Feedback has a new Feature Requests board. Suggest an idea or vote on what others have asked for. New requests appear after I have read them. Fixes & polish - Swiping between photos in fullscreen is smoother, and a day with lots of photos fills in faster. - When you swipe into another year in landscape, the year now shows, the same as in portrait. - The date picker now fits on the screen in landscape. - Photos from this year no longer appear when Include Current Year is off and the time zone auto-fix is on. (Pro) - An older video can no longer replace the one you are watching. - The video loading spinner no longer disappears too early when you swipe quickly.

The Extra Large widget on iPhone, plus fixes for widgets that came up blank or grey. Widgets - On This Day now offers the Extra Large widget size on iPhone. - Update more frequently. - Layouts adapted for some of the configutations Fixes & polish - A widget could come up blank. It ran out of memory while it loaded your photos. - Your photos keep their colors on a normal Home Screen. They only turn grey on tinted and clear Home Screens now. - Excluded albums now take effect in your widgets right away. (Pro)

A small release. It adds one recommendations for other small apps via Kickstart Exchange. That is how an app like this one finds new people, without paid ads. Highlights - Your grid shows one recommendation for other indie apps. It collects nothing about you. Pro turns this off by default - Smart albums can be excluded now, too (Pro) - The favorite heart moved away from the selection circle Supporting indie apps - On This Day shows one recommendation for another small app. It comes from Kickstart Exchange. Small apps there recommend each other instead of buying ads. When you see one, On This Day gets a place in another app. - The recommendation collects nothing about you. There is no tracking. There is no advertising profile. There is no device or account number. - Nothing about your photos leaves your device. Nothing about your library or your location leaves it either. - You see one at most. It never sits between your photos. On the free version it sits above the first year. With Pro it sits below the last year. - Pro can switch recommendations off in Settings, under Support Indie Apps. There they start off. On the free version they stay on. That is the trade. - To look at one whenever you want, open Settings, then Support Indie Apps, then See an example. Photos and albums - Albums you exclude now cover smart albums. A skipped album stays out of the grid and out of your widgets. (Pro) - Fixed adding multiple photos to an album at the same time. # On This Day 1.5 Release Notes Your photos can be displayed in a merged grid instead of a stack of years, your shared text (on the image) can carry any date you want, and some fixes for the widgets. Highlights - One merged grid: every year in a single grid, with a small badge where each year starts (Pro) - Custom share text can include the date in any format you like - Reordered Settings: All grid settings now live under one Image Grid entry - Widgets no longer come up blank, and they show video thumbnails Merged grid (Pro) - Turn on Merged Grid in Settings to see every year as one grid. The rows fill up across the year boundary. - A small badge marks the first photo of each year. - If you limit the rows per year, that year ends with a tile that shows how many photos are hidden. Tap it to see the rest. (Pro) - The per-year layout stays. Leave the setting off and nothing changes. Settings - Column count, rows per year, merged grid, current year and sorting are together merged into Image Grid to cleanup the settings page a bit Share text - Custom share text accepts a date. Write [date:MMMM yyyy] for December 2024, or [date:EEEE] for the weekday. - Write [date] on its own to use the format you already picked. - Tap a chip under the text field to insert a token. You do not have to type the patterns. - The new help button lists every token and every format letter, with an example beside each. - The example under the field shows the real result as you type. Widgets - Widgets set to one or two photos could come up blank. They now draw at every size and count. - Videos appear as a still frame with a play symbol. A day with only videos is no longer empty. - Widgets refresh much faster. - The photo count you pick is respected. Choosing 1 on a Medium widget showed 2 before. - The Extra Large widget on iPad honors your count instead of always showing 10, and goes up to 12. - Photos in the Large and Extra Large layouts are sharper. Fullscreen - Full screen photos are sharper. They were loaded below the screen's real pixel size. - Videos download faster, and a progress bar shows how far along they are. Fixes & polish - A Live Photo held you in full screen. Swiping down to close it did nothing until the motion finished. - An empty day now offers Previous and Next buttons. They jump to the closest day that has photos. - Days with many photos scroll better and use less memory.

Live Photos play when you open them, the background takes on the colors of your photos, and you can finally tell the app which albums to leave alone -- all wrapped in a new look. ## Highlights - Live Photos play in fullscreen, with zoom while they play - Backgrounds pick up the colors of the photos on screen - Add photos to albums, or (Pro) skip albums you'd rather not see - A fresh look: tap a photo and it zooms open ## Live Photos - Live Photos play in the fullscreen viewer. - Pinch or double-tap to zoom while one is playing. - Audio follows your device's silent switch. - New "Live Photos" section in Settings to control playback. ## Ambient backgrounds - In the grid, the background follows the colors of the year you're viewing and updates as you scroll. - In fullscreen, it follows the photo you're looking at and shifts as you swipe. - Both can be turned off in Settings under Ambient Backgrounds. They hold still if you use Reduce Motion. ## Albums - Add a photo to an album from the fullscreen menu, or select several in the grid and add them together. - New (Pro): exclude albums in Photo Selection settings. Those photos are skipped in the grid and in your widgets. ## A new look - Tapping a tile zooms it open into fullscreen, and it shrinks back to the photo you swiped to. - The date navigator is now one glass capsule that morphs into the date picker, instead of three separate buttons. - The date, streak, and photo counters roll when they change. - Small touches: the favorite heart bounces, the streak bolt reacts when your streak grows. ## Grid and fullscreen - RAW and JPEG versions of the same shot share one tile instead of showing up twice. - Tap a video in fullscreen to show or hide the map and toolbar, the way photos already worked. - The "See more" button is easier to spot. - The grid loads faster and no longer double-loads on a cold start. ## Widgets - New option to open the app itself instead of the tapped photo. - Widgets skip any albums you've excluded. ## Fixes & polish - Videos deeper in the grid no longer get stuck on a loading placeholder -- this covers the cases that survived the 1.3 fix. - Clearer VoiceOver labels on the day switcher, photo tiles, and toolbars, and better behavior at large text sizes. - The loyalty unlock is now described correctly: 10 months of subscription unlocks Pro for good. - Deleting a batch of selected photos asks once instead of twice.

On This Day now understands time zones, can burn the date right onto shared photos, and gives you more control over how years are shown. Thanks to everyone who tested the betas — this one took a while. ## Highlights - Photos show the time zone they were actually taken in and can be "moved" to the correct days if time zones overlap - New (Pro): share a photo with the date drawn onto the image - Tidier years and relative dates ("3 years ago") ## Time zones - Photos can display in their original capture time zone, with a caption for foreign zones (e.g. "Los Angeles · PDT").
