Find a line of fasteners and you have found the stud. HOW IT WORKS Your iPhone's magnetic sensor reacts to iron and steel. Slide the phone slowly across the wall: when it passes over a drywall screw, nail or other steel object, the reading jumps and the app alerts you. Downloaded a three day trial version of Stud Finder. It was just for an emergency job and we were unable to locate studs reliably. Had to go back to the shop and get a real one.

Sorry it let you down on that job. The app senses the metal screws and nails inside studs with the phone's magnetometer — calibrate away from any metal, hold the phone flat against the wall and scan slowly, and raise the sensitivity for thicker walls. Confirming a mark with a second scan 30–40 cm above or below makes results far more dependable.

What can I say? It doesn’t really work! For 20 minutes we’re trying to find starts and then we give up!

The app detects the metal screws and nails in the studs, so start with a calibration away from any metal, then slide the phone flat and slowly across the wall with the sensitivity raised. Lath-and-plaster walls are the hardest case; on drywall the fastener line usually shows up within a few passes.

Stud Finder now speaks Japanese, and the French and Spanish translations are complete. We also added a yearly plan, show fewer pop-ups and made the app smoother. Happy building!
