Fly through a real-time 3D solar system: eight planets, moons and comets on true orbits, live Voyager-to-Parker spacecraft, plus astronomy lessons and quizzes.
Explore the solar system at your fingertips.
Heliosphere is a real-time 3D solar system simulation powered by NASA JPL Horizons data. It accurately recreates the orbits of planets, moons, comets, and
dwarf planets while tracking the real positions of active spacecraft.

Experience the beauty of the cosmos and the wonder of science through scientifically accurate data and intuitive interaction.
Today there was an eclipse, but the app was showing the moon in the wrong place. The only way to move about the solar system is by clicking on the planets at the bottom banner (which cannot be hidden unlike the top banner); cannot click on the actual orbiting planets; cannot use swipe gestures to move around the solar system. Intuition wants me to think that clicking on a celestial body would track it’s movement as time progresses, but the user has to click on any other item, then click the desired body to readjust the camera, but time is progressing so this has to be repeated. Also there is no way to change the scale of the bodies relative to their orbits. The app says it does but it just shrinks or grows everything. That being said I do like that the app tells you when celestial events happen, and it’s very satisfying to move through time

What's New in 1.15.0
Graphics
- Saturn's and Uranus's rings now lie in the equatorial plane. They used to stand on edge and spin with the planet
- City lights come on across Earth's night side, following the real day/night terminator
- A thin blue atmosphere now shows at Earth's limb
- Earth's map is now a sharper, higher-resolution image
- Pluto now uses the real map from NASA's New Horizons, heart-shaped plain included
- A soft glow now surrounds the Sun
- Comet tails grow as comets near the Sun and vanish far from it
Positional Accuracy
- Planets and dwarf planets now sit on their real orbital planes. Every body used to lie flat in the ecliptic, so steeply inclined ones like Pluto and Eris were far off their own orbit lines
- Fixed comets and spacecraft such as Voyager and Pioneer being drawn mirror-imaged. Halley's Comet was more than 100° away from where it really is
- Orbit lines are drawn more finely, so distant bodies sit exactly on them
- Orbital data for Pluto, Eris and the other dwarf planets was refitted, so the distances and periods shown are closer to the real values
- Verified in 3D against JPL Horizons positions across 1900-2100
Performance
- The starfield is now drawn in a single pass, greatly reducing graphics load
iPhone Duo
- Folding or unfolding keeps the body you're viewing and your zoom level
Your favorites, achievements and streak are all preserved.
