Will your savings last? The new Retirement Drawdown view projects your IRA and 401(k) balances against Social Security, RMDs, and Medicare IRMAA, year by year.
Plan your retirement taxes like a pro, and stay on top of them all year long.
RetireSmartIRA answers the questions that take a CPA hours to model: Roth conversions, Social Security claiming, RMDs, IRMAA, ACA cliff, charitable timing. Real numbers in real time. Built for people who want answers, not generic advice.
ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT ACTUALLY MATTER
• What if I convert $200K to Roth this year? See federal tax, state tax, and Medicare IRMAA impact instantly.
• Will my savings last? Project how your IRA and 401(k) balances draw down over 40 years, by spending target, withdrawal rate, or RMDs only.
• When should my spouse and I claim Social Security? Find the strategy that pays the most over both your lifetimes, and protects the survivor.
• How much will my RMDs be in 10 years? Project required distributions for IRAs, 401(k)s, and inherited IRAs out to 40 years.
• Which year should I do that big charitable gift? Stack it against Roth conversions and see your real tax bill, not an estimate.
SCENARIO BUILDER: Plan in real time
Adjust Roth conversions, IRA withdrawals, pre-tax contributions, and charitable donations with sliders. Every change updates the tax waterfall, federal bracket, state bracket, and IRMAA tier instantly. See how much room you have before the next bracket, and what crossing it would cost.
KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU'LL OWE
One screen shows it all:
• Federal tax (2026 brackets)
• State tax (all 50 states + DC, including state-specific pension and retirement-income exclusions)
• NIIT 3.8% surtax
• IRMAA Medicare surcharges (per person, with cliff distance)
• ACA Premium Tax Credit and cliff repayment risk
• Standard vs. itemized with SALT cap math
No spreadsheets. No black boxes. Every dollar traces back to the input that produced it.
SEE WHETHER YOUR SAVINGS LAST
New in 1.9: the Retirement Drawdown view projects how your IRA and 401(k) balances spend down over 40 years. Model it three ways: RMDs only (your baseline), a target spending level with the gap filled after Social Security and pensions, or a withdrawal rate. Watch your balances year by year, see when your income reaches the first Medicare IRMAA tier, and toggle between future and today's dollars.
SOCIAL SECURITY COUPLES PLANNER
The decision that drives the surviving spouse's check for life. Compare claiming at 62 vs. FRA vs. 70 for both spouses, with cumulative lifetime benefits, survivor protection, deemed-filing rules, and tax integration in one view. Includes a Couples Optimization recommendation based on both your records.
RMD CALCULATOR FOR YOUR IRA AND INHERITED IRAs
Most calculators get inherited IRAs wrong. RetireSmartIRA handles them all: Traditional IRA / 401(k) RMDs at 73 (or 75 under SECURE 2.0), spousal inherited IRAs, the 10-year rule for non-eligible designated beneficiaries, stretch options for eligible designated beneficiaries, pre-RBD vs. post-RBD treatment, and minor children stretching to majority. Project household RMDs out to 40 years with adjustable growth.
WHO IT'S FOR
• Pre-retirees ages 55 to 73 evaluating Roth conversion windows
• Retirees managing RMDs, IRMAA, and the ACA cliff
• Couples planning Social Security claiming strategy
• Federal/military households (FERS, military retirement exemptions, VA Disability)
• Anyone inheriting an IRA and planning the 10-year drain
ALWAYS CURRENT
Every IRS limit, HHS poverty guideline, ACA cliff threshold, and Medicare bracket reflects 2026 values. Updated as Congress changes the rules.

Detailed annual retirement contribution and tax decisions!
RP C510
Finally an app that helps you make detailed annual retirement contribution and tax decisions. I’ve used several other apps, always looking for something that would give me the annual big picture information I needed to make my annual decisions are IRAs, Roth Conversions, Estimated Taxes, etc in one place, not spread across multiple apps and screens. I’m in my early 60s and married. I’ve used, and very much appreciate, tools like Boldin (New Retirement) that really help with long term retirement planning, but leave a bit of hole when trying to see the impact of competing financial decisions for a single year. The app uses sliders and graphs to help see benefits and tradeoffs of different amounts of contributions, conversions, and withdrawals as it relates to taxes. The Analysis section is detailed with good tips and detailed info. Very happy to find this app.Developer is active and responsive to feedback.

Thank you RP or taking the time to write this — and especially for naming the gap so precisely. You've described the design intent better than my own marketing copy: long-term planners like Boldin show you the multi-decade picture, but leave you stuck when you sit down in March needing to decide this year's Roth conversion, this year's QCD, this year's estimated tax payments. Please continue to share your input and critical analysis to help make RetireSmartIRA better. Reviews like this and direct feedback to retiresmartira@gmail.com genuinely shape the roadmap.
Outstanding RMD Planning Tool!
BGK58
On my 68th birthday, I began to consider the complex question of how to plan for the Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) which take effect when I turn 73. Having spent my entire career in the corporate world, nearly all of my savings are from my 401(k) and a lump sum pension; these have been rolled into IRAs and are subject to RMDs. The RetireSmartIRA app is an easy-to-use tool which enabled scenario modeling to quickly assess the benefit of Roth conversions to reduce the impact of the RMDs. In only 30 minutes, I modeled several scenarios and had answers to my questions! The app is very comprehensive and I highly recommend it for anyone who would like to develop a strategy to minimize the impact of RMDs and future tax payments.
Developer Response
Thank you, BGK58 — this review made my day. Your situation (career in corporate, 401(k) rollovers, planning ahead at 68 for RMDs at 73) is exactly the scenario I had in mind when I built this. If anything’s missing as you work through different conversion strategies, I’d genuinely want to hear about it at retiresmartira@gmail.com.
Just in Time!
Kaveat Emptor
This app came along “just in time” for me. I was wrestling with some of the same questions it’s designed to answer —how to avoid tax bracket changes and Medicare surcharges while maximizing 401K and RMD withdrawals. It’s very comprehensive and easy to use. I love the scenario feature and the ability to see all the impacts and sources quickly. It even helped identify a flaw in a homemade spreadsheet I had made for the same questions. Thank you!
Developer Response
Thank you Kaveat Emptor. I am so pleased you quickly found value and are now diving into scenarios to uncover more. Your input is invaluable to me, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any issues or opportunities RetireSmartIRA should address. Mt support email is retiresmartira@gmail.com. Thank you again and best regards - John
Just what I needed!
GregorJames
This app is terrific. Gave me insights and guidance I would not have clued into anywhere else. Best tool I have in the toolbox for retirement planning. Thank you!
Developer Response
Thank you, GregorJames. “Best tool in the toolbox” is high praise — and it captures exactly what I wanted this to be: a focused, specific tool that sits alongside whatever else you’re using. If features or scenarios come up that would make it more useful, please let me know at retiresmartira@gmail.com.
New in 1.9: Retirement Drawdown. Model how your IRA and 401(k) balances draw down over time, by target spending, a withdrawal rate, or RMDs only, out to a 40-year horizon, with an indicator for when your income reaches the first IRMAA tier. Plus refined New Jersey and New York retirement-income calculations, and the healthcare-cost planning (ACA + Medicare) now built into the app.
