Loupewise: Gem Identification

Exam study. Identify & catalog

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Not a photo scanner: identify stones from your own instrument readings, track your collection, generate examination reports, and drill for the GIA, Gem-A & FEEG exams. Loupewise (formerly GemID) is a complete toolkit for gemstone identification and gemology study. Enter your instrument readings and it narrows the candidates; catalog your stones; generate examination reports; and prepare for your diploma exams — one app across your whole path, from first flashcard to first client report. Loupewise is an educational reference tool for gemological observation. It is not a substitute for professional laboratory testing or a certified gemologist's opinion. IDENTIFY STONES FROM YOUR OBSERVATIONS There is no camera step and no image recognition. You take the readings; the app does the elimination, and shows you which reading ruled each candidate out. Loupewise comes to the workbench with you. Enter your refractometer, hydrostatic scale, UV lamp, polariscope, and loupe readings, and the app cross-references them against 130+ gem species and varieties — returning only the candidates genuinely consistent with your data, with the full elimination path shown. Read RI 1.544 and SG 2.65? Loupewise shows that's consistent with quartz, and the one test that narrows it further. The logic is transparent; the reasoning stays yours. NATURAL VS SYNTHETIC & TREATMENT TESTING A two-phase origin workflow: enter inclusions, growth structures, fluorescence, and spectroscopy observations, and Loupewise walks the differential for natural vs. synthetic and heated vs. unheated. Treatment coverage includes heat, diffusion, glass-filling, fracture-filling, and coating. TRACK YOUR COLLECTION Save each identification with its readings and elimination trail. Build a catalog of your stones you can search and revisit. EXAMINATION REPORTS Turn a saved identification into a clean, shareable examination report with your observations, the candidate reasoning, and your notes — for your records or your clients. A MAINTAINED REFERENCE DATABASE 130+ gem species and varieties across every major family — corundum, beryl, chrysoberyl, garnet species, tourmaline, quartz, feldspar, opal, jadeite, nephrite, spinel, topaz, peridot, zircon, tanzanite, and more — with refractive index, specific gravity, optic character, pleochroism, fluorescence, and the diagnostics that separate look-alikes. Where the exam bodies publish different reference values, Loupewise shows both, tagged to the exam that grades you. PRACTICE EXAMS FOR GEMOLOGY STUDENTS Preparing for a diploma? Loupewise includes practice exams built for the GIA 20-stone, Gem-A FGA, and FEEG European Gemmologist exams. Identify unknown stones under exam conditions, and a readiness score tracks how prepared you are across the property categories examiners test. DRILL WITH SPACED REPETITION Build property recall between sessions. 23 question types across refractive index, specific gravity, optic character, pleochroism, fluorescence, natural vs. synthetic indicators, treatment detection, and key differentiators. Filter by family, color, instrument, or confusion pairs. Spaced-repetition scheduling surfaces the cards you're weakest on. 15 LANGUAGES Available in 15 languages. 7-DAY PRO TRIAL — NO CARD REQUIRED Every account starts with a full 7-day Pro trial. After it, continue free with daily drills, full instrument input, and the full named candidate list for every identification. Hobbyist adds unlimited drills and your saved collection; Pro adds examination reports and the full exam simulators. WHO USES LOUPEWISE • Collectors and enthusiasts identifying and cataloging their stones • Gemology students preparing for GIA, Gem-A, and FEEG exams • Working gemologists and appraisers at the bench Loupewise is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by GIA, Gem-A, or FEEG. Always verify important identifications with an accredited gemological laboratory. ---

GemID is now Loupewise — same app, same account, same data. New name. • Identification engine: an exact refractive-index match now outranks a reading that only survives on tolerance; specific gravity and pleochroism re-rank candidates at the margin instead of eliminating them; an inclusion or cleavage term the app does not recognise no longer empties your list • Exam simulator: each simulated instrument now returns only readings that instrument can physically take; correct readings on a documented range edge are graded correct; the answer key explains wrong picks accurately • Drills: two new question types (dispersion, inclusion recall); a gem's own answer is never offered back as a distractor; practice answers no longer disturb your spaced-repetition schedule • Walkthrough and onboarding fully translated in all 15 languages, with a language control you can reach from the first screen • Saving an identification now tells you when a collection is required • Study tab shows the real drill pool on a cold start • Fixes to candidate names, hints, and spectrum data for several stones
