A friend of mine from another Bots and Bolts app suggested that I try Neverend, and I was pleasantly surprised by it! I’ve used AI apps before for chatting and even work tasks, but this one is definitely worth checking out if you’re into storytelling and roleplaying. A lot of other AI apps are too “sandbox-y”, except the box doesn’t have sides… so you can (almost) do anything and everything you want. Which is a good thing in a way, but it also puts the burden of most of the storytelling on the user. The AI responds to your direction. With Neverend, the user/AI relationship is where it should be: the AI is the narrator and the user is the participant. Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t add creatively to the story, because you certainly can. But no matter how creative you may be, carrying every aspect of a story or a character’s arc gets tedious after a while and tends to feel more like work than something you enjoy. Letting the AI do the majority of the heavy lifting frees you up to get immersed in the story, the world it’s set in, the characters you interact with, the history behind the current events in the story, the RPG aspects… there’s so much to experience in Neverend. For a comparison, I’ve heard of it being similar to Dungeons and Dragons. I’ve never played D&D before, so I can’t attest to that. But for me, it reminds me of the Lone Wolf book series. They’re “choose your own adventure” books with RPG elements like having an inventory of items, doing “rolls” for particular skill checks (physical, mental, social, etc.) to advance the story in unforeseeable ways. It’s pretty much a game that creates itself one turn at a time. For the open-ended stories in Neverend, that means the future hasn’t been written, and never will be until you finish your turn, then the AI responds (its turn), then another decision on how you advance the story, etc. For the goal-ending stories, there is a goal and each turn draws you even closer to it. Eventually, the goal is achieved, whether it’s ideally, the total opposite of ideally, or anywhere in between. But no two experiences with the same story will ever truly be the same. So those stories add an extra layer of urgency, which can make it more fun for people who enjoy pushing themselves towards a final objective. This app is still fairly new, so features are still in the works and being rolled out as soon as possible. I think Neverend is starting out really well and the skilled and dedicated developers at Bots and Bolts are working hard to give everyone the best experience possible. It can only get better from here, so give Neverend a try. I think you’ll like what you see!
