Bromyde Contact turns your iPad into a precision contact-printing surface for real photographic paper. Import a photo, place paper emulsion-side down on the glass, and let the app run a timed, contrast-graded exposure at true physical size. WHAT'S FREE AND WHAT'S A PURCHASE Bromyde Contact is free to download. Light Source mode is free: use the screen as a grade-coloured contact-printing light for your own film negatives, with timed exposures, split-grade filtering and automated test strips at any paper size. Printing from your own photos requires the Digital Negatives in-app purchase. It unlocks exposures and test strips from a digital negative, together with dodge and burn, tone controls, glass compensation and film character. You can import photos and try every editing control before you buy. HOW IT WORKS Import a photo and Bromyde converts it into a digital negative — grayscale, inverted, tone mapped and flipped for printing. Choose a paper size, place the paper on the screen, start the countdown, and process the exposed sheet in trays. Prefer film? Light Source mode turns the display into a grade-coloured contact-printing light. Put your own negative and paper on the glass and expose at the selected size. PRINTING CONTROLS - Contrast grades 0 to 5, with single-filter and split-grade workflows - Live split-grade timing, with the lower grade exposed first - Automated test strips with 5, 7 or 9 bands - Exposure time, light intensity, and a start delay - Standard 3.5x5, 4x6 and 5x7 paper sizes, plus custom sizes, rendered 1:1 DODGE AND BURN (DIGITAL NEGATIVES) Shape a print with familiar darkroom controls. Dodging holds light back during the base exposure; burning adds a separate timed exposure to a selected region. Set strength in stops and see the seconds each burn adds. Tap a region and Bromyde can find its boundary, detect a subject, or identify areas likely to block up or lose highlight detail. Suggested corrections remain fully editable. TONE, CALIBRATED ON PAPER (DIGITAL NEGATIVES) Adjust shadows, highlights, and midtone contrast independently. Soft, Normal, and Contrasty starting points were refined with printed test targets on both OLED and LCD iPads, and every control remains adjustable for your paper, chemistry, and process. DARKROOM AND STUDIO Protected printing screens use true black, dim red controls, hidden system chrome, and controlled display brightness to minimize stray light near photographic paper. Darkroom mode applies the same black-and-red palette to navigation and editing. Because paper sensitivity and room conditions vary, confirm compatibility with your materials using a standard safelight test before handling unexposed paper. Studio mode uses normal iOS colours for setup and editing in room light. It is not intended for use beside light-sensitive paper. GLASS COMPENSATION (DIGITAL NEGATIVES) Optional glass compensation pre-sharpens the image to counter softening from the iPad cover glass. Adjust it to suit your iPad, paper contact, and process. FILM CHARACTER (DIGITAL NEGATIVES) Add optional 35mm or 120-style frames, sprocket holes, rebate, edge markings, grain, vignette, selective focus, and light leaks. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Photos and settings stay on your device. Bromyde has no account system, analytics, tracking, or image-upload service. REQUIREMENTS Requires iPadOS 17 or later. Printing must be full screen for accurate 1:1 sizing and control of nearby light. On systems that support app windowing, Bromyde blocks printing until its window covers the display.
